Young & Free Maine’s Bucks for Break contest gives exposure to Maine’s CUs, attracts young members

This winter Young & Free Maine is offering a unique online giveaway where Maine’s 18-to-25 year old credit union members (and potential members) may enter for a chance to win one of two prizes of $500 or a bonus $250 towards spring break! Bucks for Break is a new spin on the successful Bucks for Books promotion offered in the fall. Since 2015, the Bucks for Books contest has been a great way to introduce young people to credit unions - approximately 30% of Bucks for Books entrants were not yet credit union members. This year’s contest, launching on Monday, February 5, at 12:00 P.M., will build on that excitement and allow credit unions to offer a head start to college-aged members in their area.

“The Bucks for Break contest is a great opportunity to build upon the success we’ve seen with Bucks for Books,“ shared Young & Free Maine Spokester, Jake Holmes. “Not only can we reach potential members, but we can further strengthen the relationships we have with existing members. During the contest and beyond, entrants will have access to all of the financial literacy tools and educational content that Young & Free Maine has to offer.”

The Bucks for Break contest makes credit unions stand out from the competition, look fresh and cutting edge – relevant to a whole new generation of members. It’s also a great way to attract potential new members to check out what their credit union is doing. The videos and blogs from Jake are an active way for every credit union to engage younger members and potential members – by meeting them in their space, acknowledging a concern for college-aged students and building a positive foundation that they can build a banking relationship on later.

Follow Jake on Young & Free Maine’s website and social media pages for blogs, posts, and videos. Credit unions can also spread the word by:

  • Including a Bucks for Break banner link on your credit union web site
  • Displaying promotional materials in your branches – at workstations as a conversation starter – or request a graphic for branch plasma screens or ATM screens
  • Posting about Bucks for Break on your credit union website, blogs or social media pages – other than school events, this is how most members learned about Bucks for Break
  • Encouraging staff to talk it up to all members, family, friends and neighbors that have a student in their family
  • Encouraging all of your young members to enter. It’s fun, it’s free, it’s easy!

The contest is open for entries through Thursday, March 1 at 3:00 P.M. Winners will be announced on or around Monday, March 5. Please contact Jake Holmes if you would like to receive promotional materials for your branch. Click here for more information and complete contest rules.
