TV segment highlights CUs consumer focus

Strong media relationships continue to pay dividends for positive media opportunities for Maine CUs.  Recently, in conjunction with Consumer Protection Week, the Maine CU League represented Maine CUs in sharing expertise to help consumers better protect their financial information and to prevent fraud.  In a two-part segment that aired statewide on WCSH 6 and WLBZ 2, the League offered advice and knowledge on how to avoid certain scamming techniques, such as skimming.

Ben Jordan, SVP of Product Development for Synergent and your League, offered tips on how to avoid being a victim.  "Scammers are getting very sophisticated in their techniques to try and acquire sensitive information.  Skimmers have been a growing issue in recent years so consumers should be especially careful about being a victim of a skimming device."

Jordan also advised consumers to check their credit and debit cards frequently in case any unusual behavior has taken place, and offered the Federal Trade Commission as a resource for consumers to find other tips.

Jon Paradise, Vice President of Public Affairs and Engagement, said "opportunities to reinforce the fact that credit unions look out for consumers, and provide tips to help protect their finances align with the values and mission of credit unions.  As not-for-profit, financial cooperatives that are member-owned, these types of segments help to highlight the CU difference."
