"Support for Maine CUs knows no party," Congressional Delegation reinforces this message at Annual Breakfast

Washington might be known for its gridlock and lack of agreement, on almost anything, but when it comes to Maine's Delegation and support for Maine's credit unions, all four members are in agreement.  "Maine credit unions do great work for your members, the economy and the communities," was the overarching theme in the remarks from all four members and/or their representatives of the state's Congressional Delegation at the Maine CU League's Annual Breakfast for the Delegation on Capitol Hill.  This year's event, held in conjunction with the CUNA GAC, took place on Tuesday, February 27, with nearly 110 Maine CU representatives in attendance, largest-ever group to attend.

In his opening remarks prior to introducing the Delegation, Todd Mason, President of the Maine CU League, acknowledged the size of the group and the strong support of the Delegation. "To have a group the size of ours take the time to come to Washington, D.C., and represent credit unions reinforces our ability to generate grassroots advocay and involvement.  We have representatives from all levels including CEOs, managers and volunteers from credit unions of all sizes, and representing every region of Maine here today.  Maine CUs understand the value and importance of being part of the legislative and political process.  I would like to take time to thank our entire Congressional Delegation – and their staff who represent them so well – for all the support that they give to Maine's Credit Unions and for their recognition of the important work that you all do in the communities all across Maine serving nearly 700,000 members."

Each member of the Delegation made brief remarks to attendees.  Senator Collins praised credit unions for "all the work you do, not just for members, but for everyone.  Your ending hunger campaign set a new record and even had a three-time Olympian and champion from the Jamaican bobsled team help you to announce it.  When it comes to ending hunger, Maine CUs gets the gold for your accomplishment and your generosity."  She also reiterated her unyielding support for the credit union tax exemption.  "During negotiations on tax reform, I made it clear that the CU tax exemption was not on the table."

In his remarks, Senator King quipped, "I'm a little worried that no one is left behind in Maine because they're all here at this breakfast.  Your record numbers are impressive."  When discussing the issues, Senator King, an early co-sponsor of S.R. 2155 - the Economic Growth, Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act, said, "I am delighted to support legislation that will lift the burden on small financial institutions and help the Maine economy."

Congressman Poliquin highlighted the impact that Maine CUs have the Maine economy.  "With nearly 3,500 jobs provided by credit unions, and the services you provide your members, you make a difference every day, and I appreciate it."  The Congressman also talked about data security legislation and his belief that "we need the have accountability and a uniform standard for all sides."

Due to another commitment, a representative from Congresswoman Pingree's staff spoke on her behalf.  Todd Stein, the Congresswoman's aide, said, "Congresswoman Pingree wants to see legislation passed that will help credit unions.  S.R. 2155 is one we are watching closely because it contains several important items for credit unions including residential mortgages and senior safe provisions."

Elise Baldacci, Vice President of Governmental Affairs for the Maine CU League, called this year's Breakfast "a demonstration of what cooperation can accomplish.  To have credit unions come together to have this type of showing in Washington for all four members members of our Congressional Delegation and their staff to see shows that we are stronger together.  Each member of our Delegation was impressed by our turnout and that type of presence sends a strong message about our grassroots.  We really appreciate everyone taking the time to participate in this year's Breakfast and GAC."
