Saving You Money TV segment features Maine CUs' Savings Challenge

In the latest segment of WGME CBS 13 and FOX 23's 'Saving You Money' series, the Maine CU League successfully facilitated having Maine CUs featured in the segment.  The segment highlighted Jake Holmes of Maine's credit unions taking part in the 52-week Savings Challenge.  "Essentially what happens is there's 52 weeks in a year, Week 1 you put $1 into a savings account, Week 2 you put $2 into that savings account, Week 3 you put $3 into that savings account and so on and so on until the 52nd week where you put $52 away," Holmes said.

WGME CBS 13 and FOX 23 said Holmes did "a great job explaining it, and making it fun for viewers.  We are appreciative of the League's willingness to provide story ideas and expertise on a variety of topics that are interesting to our viewers."

Holmes, who will continue in the Young & Free Maine Spokester role until June before transitioning into a new financial education role for Maine's credit unions, said the challenge is both fun but easy.  "$1,300 sounds super daunting, it sounds incredibly impossible, and I just think the slower you start, you don't get burnt out, you don't get overwhelmed.  I would suggest getting family and friends involved because Gamification is huge in sticking to your goals, so if you kind of all make a challenge together, 'I'm going to save more than you,' it's like a friendly competition."

Jon Paradise, Vice President of Public Affairs and Engagement for the Maine CU League, said segments, such as this, not only highlight Maine credit unions but "reinforce the focus and commitment that credit unions have on helping consumers with their financial needs and goals."

The piece has received more than 1,000 views on WGME's website, and was also recently posted on WJBQ's (Q-97.9), a popular radio station with young adults, website.
