Preventing Hunger in Maine During COVID-19

Credit unions operate by the People Helping People philosophy. As our members, communities, and state deal with the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in our region, lending a hand becomes even more meaningful.

The League is providing Full Plates Full Potential with $10,000 to support their Emergency Response Fund to help provide meals to students across Maine while school is out. Full Plates Full Potential has kicked off a fundraising drive and every dollar raised will support this initiative. If your credit union would like to make a contribution to this important effort using your credit union’s Ending Hunger funds, please submit a  donation request to endinghunger@mainecul.org.

If your credit union is interested in offering your credit union parking lot as a site for school meal distribution during the COVID-19 emergency, please email League Public Affairs & Communications Manager Jen Burke at jburke@mainecul.org, and she will put you in touch with your school district’s food services director. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) is waiving some of the requirements related to meal distribution, but not all. Even if you do volunteer your credit union, it may not qualify as an approved site to distribute meals. Your school department will know best.

Our friends at Good Shepherd Food Bank also are looking for support. We have information posted on the League’s website if your credit union would like to volunteer to sort food at their Hampden or Auburn facilities. If your credit union is interested in providing a donation to Good Shepherd Food Bank to support their emergency response efforts, we encourage you to use your Ending Hunger funds. The League will be making a donation to Good Shepherd Food Bank in the coming days.

The League knows many credit unions are already helping their community partners. Please share your efforts with the League so we can help you communicate how you are supporting those in need.
