Maine CUs have plenty of heroes so time to nominate one for national honor

As Bette Midler asks in the award-winning song, Wind Beneath My Wings, "Did you ever know that you're my hero?"  In Maine, the CU System is filled with ordinary individuals who do extraordinary things, and we want them to be recognized.  Credit Union Magazine, in cooperation with state leagues including the Maine CU League, are seeking nominations for the 11th annual Credit Union Hero of the Year Award, sponsored by CSCU.  The deadline for nominations is December 8, so there is still time to place an individual for nomination but time is of the essence.

The magazine is seeking individuals exemplify the credit union philosophy of "people helping people," go the extra mile to make a difference in their communities, and demonstrate their service, advocacy, and commitment to the credit union movement.  In Maine, that could be the person who lends their talents to teach young children financial education, or the person who organizes a fundraiser to help someone in their community who is struggling, or a person who thinks of ending hunger as a passion and their efforts mean that less people have to worry about where their next meal is going to come from.  There are countless other examples, too.

Jon Paradise, Vice President of Public Affairs and Engagement for the Maine CU League, said, "The passion and tireless commitment to community, members and other initiatives is alive and well in the Maine CU System.  It would be great for one of our own to be honored for their work.  I would encourage nominations to be submitted before the deadline closes."

"We seek to recognize those who are making significant contributions that advance the credit union movement," says Ann Peterson, CUNA's vice president of publishing. "We're looking for people who have truly invested their hearts and souls into creating a lasting impression not only at their credit union, but on behalf of all credit unions."

"We invest annually to sponsor the Credit Union Hero of the Year Award because it gives us the opportunity to celebrate credit union leaders who live the credit union philosophy every day," says Jennifer Bryant, vice president of marketing at CSCU. "We are pleased to partner with CUNA and look forward to celebrating all the 2018 nominees and their commitment to service."

For an individual to be nominated, qualifications include:

  • Are credit union system employees or volunteers.
  • Are working or retired.
  • Are unsung heroes, going above and beyond to promote credit union philosophy.
  • Take a stand or exhibit a firm belief in credit union values.
  • Show dedication to credit union principles.
  • Make a difference in the local community.

The outstanding professionals selected as Credit Union Heroes will be featured in the March issue of Credit Union Magazine.

Readers will vote at news.cuna.org to select the 2018 Credit Union Hero of the Year, who will be honored at the America's Credit Union Conference, June 28 to July 1 in Boston.
