Lend Your Ending Hunger Support to The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital

The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH) needs our movement’s help to ensure they can continue assisting the food insecure families being served by the hospital. Join the League and put your Ending Hunger dollars to good use by supporting Maine’s only full-service children’s hospital.

The Ask

As Maine’s only fully accredited children’s hospital, the BBCH takes pride in providing the very best medical care for every patient who comes through their doors. They are committed to looking at all the factors that might impact a child’s ability to get well or a family’s ability to focus on the health of their child. For this reason, the hospital screens all of their families for food and diaper insecurity while they’re in their care.

In recent years, BBCH has seen the need for supplemental meals and emergency food bags increase significantly for the families in their care. Based on current trends, the hospital anticipates doubling their distribution of free meals and food bags within its Emergency Department, In-Patient Unit, and PICU this year.

Providing frozen meals and food bags has been possible thanks to past philanthropic support, but the funds available to meet these emergency needs have become depleted. With this significant need in mind, the hospital has requested a $10,000 contribution from Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger to meet the critical and ongoing demand.

A contribution in this amount would allow BBCH to provide more than 1,000 meals for families in need within its Emergency Department, In-Patient Unit, and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) over the course of the next year—and potentially allow them to expand the opportunity to families in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

How Your Credit Union Can Help

To help meet this fundraising request, the League is contributing $5,000 using our Ending Hunger funds. We are hoping Maine credit unions will support us and leverage their own Ending Hunger dollars to fulfill—and possibly exceed—the remaining $5,000.

If your credit union would like to contribute to this important effort, please contact Jen Burke at jburke@mainecul.org by August 31. No donation amount is too small. All credit union donors will be:

  • Invited to a formal check presentation/photo opportunity at BBCH
  • Recognized in a press release
  • Highlighted on social media

The lump sum payment provided to the hospital will be made on one Ending Hunger check.
