League Awards Spotlight: The John G. Murphy Rising Star Award

Throughout the nomination period for the League’s 2024 awards program, we will feature an award category to help credit unions identify individuals who are deserving of a special honor. There is no better way to demonstrate your appreciation for someone special at your credit union than by nominating them for a League Award.

When the League’s Awards & Convention Committee convened to discuss the annual awards program, members agreed that something was missing. A new award was needed—one that recognizes an up-and-coming leader in Maine’s credit union system.

The League is proud to announce the creation of the John G. Murphy Rising Star Award. This award will be given each year at the League’s Convention to an individual who is newer to working at a credit union, and represents the hard working disposition and dedication of John G. Murphy, former League and Synergent President/CEO. Murphy began his career with MECUL Services Corp. in the Print & Supply Division in 1973, and with over 40 years of service in the credit union industry, became a visionary leader and dedicated advocate of the credit union movement.

“The committee felt that we wanted to recognize the rising stars of our industry by adding a new award category,” shared Julie Marquis, CEO at Five County CU and Chair of the League’s Awards & Convention Committee. “When we were considering what to name the award and whose career defined what a rising star looks like, we thought of John Murphy’s outstanding career. He started at the Maine Credit Union League when he was only 18 in the Print & Supply Division. Forty-four years later, he retired as the CEO of the Maine Credit Union League and Synergent—a position that he held for 25 years.”

You can recognize a rising star at your credit union by nominating them for this prestigious new honor. Visit the League’s website and complete the online form by March 17. Eligible award recipients are employees of any Maine credit union who have a tenure of less than eight years working for the credit union movement (the nominee may have worked at more than one credit union during this eight-year period). Nominators should include a narrative description of why they believe this nominee is deserving of the award and highlight qualities about the individual’s personal character, leadership style, unique accomplishments/acts of service, and contributions to their credit union(s).

“John Murphy is one of the most influential, recognizable names in our entire credit union movement,” added Marquis. “Quite the Rising Star in my opinion!”

The John G. Murphy Rising Star Award will be presented on Friday, May 17 at the 86th Annual League Convention. For more information about the League’s Convention awards, please contact Jordan Inkley, League Conference and Event’s Manager, at jinkley@mainecul.org.
