CUs & CU Chapters Commit $24,000 to Support School Meal Programs

Credit unions and credit union chapters have answered the call to help schools feed kids in their communities. $24,000 in funding has been committed to support Full Plates Full Potential and school nutrition departments. These funds will help alleviate some of the strain the pandemic has placed on school meal budgets.

“When Full Plates Full Potential contacted our League about the large volume of grant requests they had received from school departments across Maine, I knew our credit unions and chapters would want to help,” said Jen Burke, League Public Affairs & Communications Manager. “They stepped up in a big way to lend schools a hand. Thanks to their contributions, many school nutrition departments will be in a much better position to feed students this year.”

To serve food safely, school departments are in need of additional supplies like carts, food packaging, and PPE. To cover the costs of these items, many school districts have applied for a Full Plates Full Potential Fall Meal Grant.

“Full Plates Full Potential doesn’t want to leave any grant requests on the table, but they can’t do it alone,” said Burke. “Ending hunger in Maine truly is a collaborative effort and I am glad they reached out to us for assistance.”

If your credit union or chapter is interested in helping Full Plates Full Potential fulfill a school grant request, please email Jen Burke at jburke@mainecul.org for more information.
