CU News & Events – September Edition


Fall is in full swing at credit unions across Maine, from teeing off for golf tournaments to fearless fundraising for organizations we all love. Our League provides an inside look at what some of our credit unions were up to in September.

  • Promotions brought changes to the Acadia FCU management team. Congratulations to Julie Hayes, the new Director of Branch Operations, and to Esther Cole, the new Madawaska Branch Manager!
  • On September 5, Atlantic FCU announced it would be donating $1,370 to the Campaign for Ending Hunger thanks to Portland Sea Dogs. For every run scored during the month of August, the credit union promised a $10 donation to the Campaign. Way to go, Sea Dogs and Atlantic FCU!
  • September 7 brought Bangor FCU’s 9th Annual Ending Hunger Golf Tournament to Rocky Knoll Country Club, which raised more than $7,400!
  • Brewer FCU invited people to submit their favorite recipe as part of a fundraiser for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Capital Area FCU hosted lunch on September 8 with all funds going to Special Olympics Maine.
  • Casco FCU‘s 6th Annual Ride to End Hunger raised $6,442 on September 9 for food pantries in Buxton, Gorham, and Standish.
  • Central Maine FCU shared extensive fraud prevention details on social media following a scam where fraudsters were pretending to be from the credit union.
  • Changing Seasons FCU’s website solicits volunteers to the credit union’s Board and Supervisory Committee.
  • Community CU had beautiful, blooming flower bouquets available for purchase to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • Connected CU joined their friends at the Augusta Teen Center for a financial literacy class with JMG students.
  • cPort CU received recognition for their work with ProsperityME and with the immigrant community in receiving the Outstanding Community Partner Award at the ProsperityME Block Party. Congratulations!
  • Cumberland County FCU joined the League and other donating credit unions for a check presentation at The Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital on September 21. Learn more about the donation and the other credit unions that participated in this effort here.
  • Dirigo FCU was proud to participate in the 15th Annual Dempsey Challenge, which raised over $1,700,000.
  • Earlier in the month, a team from Downeast CU attended the 18th Annual Eastport Pirate Festival, complete with their own parade float where they were in full pirate gear!
  • Eastmill FCU’s social media reminded members of the basic fraud tips to keep in mind in order to stay protected from fraudsters.
  • Over Labor Day weekend, Empeople CU staff visited the Portland Sea Dogs, hosting a booth to greet fans.
  • Over the Portland Sea Dogs baseball season, Evergreen CU committed to donating $10 for every hit (or $25 for every homerun) the 5th batter gets at home to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP). August’s $55 brought the season’s total to benefit the ARLGP to $435!
  • Five County CU presented a $1,000 donation to Lisbon Area Community Outreach, a nonprofit organization supported and staffed by multiple churches that assists hungry individuals in the Lisbon, Durham, and Bowdoin area.
  • Franklin-Somerset FCU just finished their “Fall in Love” raffle to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. The credit union raffled off three picnic baskets, filled with autumn-themed goodies, each with a value of $250.
  • To benefit the Tiger Food Pantry, Gardiner FCU collected canned goods.
  • Great Falls FCU shared their new hours with members, stating the adjustment is to help better align with member traffic patterns.
  • In September, Katahdin FCU held their Ending Hunger Golf Tournament at Hillcrest Golf Club in Millinocket. The event raised over $11,000 in total!
  • KSW FCU enticed members to join them for a fun 75th Anniversary celebration of International Credit Union Day on October 19, inviting them to a membership celebration with free catered lunch and a food drive.
  • KV FCU announced the winners of their Distinguished Teacher Awards: Erica Wright (Mount Merici Academy), Jill MacKenzie (Belgrade Central School), and Kirsten Pelletier (China Middle School). They will each be presented with their $1,000 checks at the Fall Festival on October 14. Congratulations to all!
  • Sherry from Lincoln Maine FCU celebrated 20 years with the credit union in early September. Thank you for your years of dedication and service, Sherry!
  • September 22 brought Lisbon Community FCU’s Member Appreciation Day, full of love, trust, fun, and community.
  • Maine Family FCU was a proud sponsor of An Angel’s Wing 6th Annual Gala Rockin’ for Recovery event.
  • Maine Highlands FCU reminded members in their fall newsletter to take advantage of the Skip-A-Payment program for more quality time this upcoming winter.
  • A group from Maine Savings FCU competed in Eastern Maine Community College’s EMCC Foundation 2023 Trivia Tournament on September 14. All proceeds benefited the Foundation to support the school’s students, programs, equipment, and facilities.
  • The Commercial Lending team from Maine State CU teed off at the Waterville Area Habitat for Humanity Annual Golf Tournament.
  • Midcoast FCU celebrated National Food Pantry Day on September 1 by soliciting support for local hunger relief organizations.
  • Milestones FCU shared exciting news that members with Visa® debit cards can now utilize Apple Pay® and Google Pay™.
  • New Dimensions FCU encouraged members to help their giving tree bloom! For just $1, members could purchase an “apple” for the tree. Proceeds from this fall fundraiser will benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics Maine.
  • Northeast CU enjoyed attending the Sanford Airport Brew Fest on Saturday, September 23. It was a great opportunity to interact with patrons and brewers and share credit union swag.
  • Danielle and Tina from NorState FCU attended the University of Maine at Fort Kent’s Community Fair.
  • Just in time for cooler temperatures, four homemade blankets were sold for suggested donations at OTIS FCU. Proceeds went to local food pantries.
  • Oxford FCU got involved with local schools at Meroby Elementary’s back-to-school ice cream social, Dirigo Elementary’s Community Fair, and Dirigo High School’s Jeopardy.
  • Information on gap insurance was provided to members by Penobscot County FCU, noting the benefits of the insurance in the event of theft or total loss.
  • PeoplesChoice CU encouraged members to sign up for their new debit “Round-Up” Program to help end hunger in Maine if they aren’t signed up already. Members can use their card as normal and spending dollars will be rounded up to the next dollar, with the difference being donated to local meal programs.
  • In support of the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Sabattus Regional CU ran their “Kickstart to Fall 50/50 Raffle” in branches.
  • Seaboard FCU was named as a finalist for the 2023 Deep Target Digital Impact Award. Their top ads were their CD and money market ads seen in their online and mobile banking. Congratulations to the credit union on this accomplishment!
  • Towards the end of the month, the Humane Society in Waterville received a visit and donation of $560 plus ample daily pet items from Sebasticook Valley FCU.
  • The County FCU attended Old Town’s Riverfest on September 23. Team members also walked in the parade as a proud event sponsor.
  • Town & Country FCU kicked off its 13th annual Better Neighbor Fund grant program in September and will be giving away a total of $25,000 shared among eight local non-profit organizations based on the public’s votes. Voting takes place in October and grant winners will be announced in November. The credit union has given away $325,000 to support more than 120 initiatives since the program was launched.
  • Trademark FCU welcomed Mike as a new Member Service Officer I and Dylan as a new Branch Manager. Welcome, Mike and Dylan!
  • While the TruChoice FCU team was unable to be at the Maine Children’s Cancer Program Walk this year, they wore their t-shirts in support and surpassed their $5,000 fundraising goal. Nice work!
  • September was a busy month for UCU. Team members welcomed college students back to campus, making visits to the University of Maine, UMaine Maine Machias, UMaine Farmington, UMaine Presque Isle, and the University of Southern Maine.
  • Winthrop Area FCU informed members to hang up and call the credit union directly if they receive a text or phone call claiming to be from the credit union’s fraud department to verify the request is valid and protect their personal information.
