CU News & Events – January Edition


With the start of the new year comes ample opportunities for connection, fundraising, and community engagement. Maine’s credit unions welcomed 2025 with exciting announcements and activities for all to enjoy. Below, our League provides a snapshot of what some of our credit unions were up to in January:

  • Acadia FCU hosted Mrs. Degler’s Business Entrepreneur class from the St. John Valley Technology Center in Frenchville, taking them on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Fort Kent branch and Operations Center.  
  • The Atlantic FCU Foundation presented a $10,000 grant to the Midcoast Youth Center’s Compass Afterschool and Summer Programs.  
  • Congratulations are in order for Travis Martin from Bangor FCU for his recent promotion to VP of Lending after 20 years of experience in the field! 
  • Brewer FCU encouraged members to use their Shark Saver youth accounts to help teach money management skills. 
  • Capital Area FCU hosted a small indoor flea market to benefit Special Olympics Maine. 
  • Like many credit unions, Casco FCU hosts food drives for local pantries all year long. Earlier this month, they excitedly shared that 1,634 pounds of food were donated in 2024 thanks to the generous donations of members.  
  • In their newsletter, Coast Line CU mentioned they are seeking a professional for their Supervisory Committee. 
  • Community CU announced Karen Cloutier as Employee of the Year and Rodney Green as Rookie of the Year. Congratulations to both on this achievement! 
  • Connected CU joined other Kennebec Valley Chapter credit unions to put on a Financial Fitness Fair for students at Mt. View High School. 
  • cPort CU provided a $5,000 donation to the LA Metro Chamber’s Scholarship Fund to foster educational opportunities for the next generation. 
  • On January 17, Cumberland County FCU came together for Flannel Friday to raise both awareness and funds for juvenile diabetes. 
  • Dirigo FCU helped members avoid fraud by sharing information on what to keep an eye out for and how to stay safe online. 
  • Downeast CU CEO Joe Moses celebrated 20 years with the credit union. Congratulations on this milestone, Joe, and thank you for serving your community! 
  • The East Millinocket branch of Eastmill FCU started a Valentine’s Day Raffle to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Empeople CU provided financial tips to start the new year off right. 
  • On January 29, Evergreen CU hosted a 30-minute Budgeting 101 virtual workshop. 
  • Five County CU attended the Maine Agricultural Trades Show and enjoyed participating in the Maine Farmer Resource Network Roundtable. 
  • Gardiner FCU held a book sale in the lobby throughout the month, with all proceeds benefitting the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Katahdin FCU donated to the Katahdin Area Support Group in memory of their Board member, Gary Dumas. The Katahdin Area Support Group provides valuable resources for those in the community that are living with cancer. 
  • Save the date! KSW FCU invited members to its 2025 Annual Meeting taking place on April 15 in Winslow. 
  • KV FCU was thrilled to share their annual Cash Calendar fundraiser for the Campaign for Ending Hunger raised a record-breaking $13,210 at the end of 2024. 
  • The Lighthouse CU Foundation officially opened its 2025 scholarship applications and will award $53,000 in funding to students for the 2025/2026 school year. 
  • On social media, Lincoln Maine FCU continued their “Meet the Team Monday” series, introducing different employees of the credit union to members to feature all the people who make Lincoln Maine FCU so special. 
  • Lisbon Community FCU sold chocolate candy bars for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.  
  • Rachel McKinley, AVP of Marketing at Maine Family FCU, attended a meeting with the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston-Auburn and shared insights on personal fraud prevention and ways to stay safe in a digital world. 
  • Maine Savings FCU provided an $8,000 donation to the Salvation Army to support the Coats for Kids program. 
  • Maine State CU supported Spectrum Generations’ Meals on Wheels program with a portion of their 2024 Drive for Good proceeds. The Drive for Good initiative allows members to donate to a nonprofit through their auto loan process. 
  • Chandra, Lori, and Nadia from Midcoast FCU assisted the Freeport Community Services’ “First Friday Free Lunch Program” by preparing chicken and sausage soup. 
  • Milestones FCU invited members in good standing to submit their intentions to run for one of the two open Board of Directors seats. 
  • As part of their commitment to supporting the future leaders of their community, New Dimensions FCU announced $5,000 in scholarships for 2025 graduating seniors. 
  • NorState FCU encouraged the community to join them for Winter Blast 2025, with events taking place at the Grand Isle Community Center for free weekly. 
  • With January marking the start of tax season, OTIS FCU ensured members were prepared and cautioned them about common tax fraud scams. 
  • Oxford FCU provided three classes in January: “It’s a Scam” was presented twice, and “Managing Your Account” took place during the time in between. 
  • A group from Penobscot County FCU offered a helping hand at a Special Olympics Maine event. 
  • PeoplesChoice CU recognized two Q4 Star Employees on social media. Sean and Krystle’s dedication, commitment to excellence, and constant drive to go above and beyond made a difference for members and coworkers, earning the Star Employee designation. Congratulations!  
  • Sabattus Regional CU began two fundraisers in advance of the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday to benefit Special Olympics Maine, selling wooden roses and hosting a Valentine’s Day Basket Raffle. 
  • Not only did Saco Valley CU sponsor a favorite guest meal for the Saco Meals Program, but they helped serve and brought a basket of nonperishable food items to donate with them. 
  • Early in January, Seaboard FCU sent Marianne Bridges off on a well-deserved retirement after 43 years with the credit union, thanking her for the impact she has had on the community. Congratulations, Marianne, and enjoy retirement! 
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU announced the winners of their holiday cash calendar sweepstakes to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.  
  • The County FCU posted many helpful tips on social media throughout January to aid members in spotting and subsequently avoiding fraud. 
  • During the month of January, Town & Country FCU continued its eight-part financial wellness workshop series called “Aging Well: Your Money and More.” The series addresses some of the most common questions and challenges people face as they age; it includes things like planning and saving for retirement, navigating Medicare, strategies to make your money last, making Social Security work for you, long-term care, asset protection, and more. 
  • Trademark FCU shared fun behind-the-scenes insight on Facebook into the making of their new commercial. 
  • TruChoice FCU donated over $6,000 to the McAuley Residence at Northern Light Mercy Hospital as a result of purchases members made with their TruHero credit cards in 2024. 
  • Staff from University CU assisted Special Olympics Maine at their bocce tournament in Bangor. 
  • Winthrop Area FCU shared helpful information regarding identity theft in honor of Identity Theft Awareness Week at the end of January.
