Amidst celebrations for Valentine’s Day, ending hunger in communities across Maine, financial education and wellness, and much more, our League’s credit unions spread the love this February. Below, we offer an inside look at what some of our credit unions did with and for their communities in the last month:
- Employees of Acadia FCU celebrated Spirit Week in style, showcasing team spirit throughout many fun, themed days.
- Atlantic FCU fought hunger in February with the help of new members, donating $50 to the Campaign for Ending Hunger for each new account opened within the month.
- On February 25, Bangor FCU joined credit union colleagues in hosting a Financial Fitness Fair at Hancock County Technical Center.
- Brewer FCU began a creative new fundraiser, The Great Snowbank Meltdown, in support of the Campaign for Ending Hunger. Participants guess when the huge snowbank at one of their branches will melt for $1 per entry or $5 for six entries, and all proceeds will support local food pantries. The winner will receive a $50 VISA gift card.
- Capital Area FCU shared exciting news of their naming to Newsweek and Plant-A Insights Group’s “America’s Best Regional Banks and Credit Unions 2025” list. Acadia FCU, Bangor FCU, Central Maine FCU, Casco FCU, Coast Line CU, cPort CU, Dirigo FCU, Eastmill FCU, Evergreen CU, Gardiner FCU, Katahdin FCU, Maine Family FCU, Maine Savings FCU, Saco Valley CU, and Trademark FCU join Capital Area FCU on this list. Congratulations to all!
- Patty and Wendy from Casco FCU offered their assistance at Special Olympics’ 2025 State Winter Games at the end of the month.
- Central Maine FCU promoted on its website that it is now supporting student loans, demonstrating the credit union’s commitment to those pursuing their educational dreams.
- In their newsletter, Coast Line CU shared the opportunity for four $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded to those continuing their education, with two going to high school seniors and two going to full-time business students at Southern Maine Community College.
- Community CU kicked off their 5th Annual Signature Soup Challenge, running from February 15 through March 15 thanks to the support of many generous local businesses.
- Connected CU announced that it received its AARP BankSafe Training Seal, recognizing their commitment to safeguarding older adults from financial exploitation. Congratulations!
- cPort CU sponsored and attended Northeastern University’s Roux Institute Career Fair on February 27, chatting with students looking to enter Maine’s workforce.
- With fraud a constant threat, Cumberland County FCU made members aware of local property owners receiving “final warning” notices in the mail that state coverage has or will expire. The credit union advised any recipients not to interact with contact information in the letter or provide personal information.
- In the midst of tax season, Dirigo FCU shared six tax mistakes with members, including filing late, missing deductions, incorrect information, and more.
- In honor of Valentine’s Day, Downeast CU encouraged members to not risk their investment(s) in nice jewelry by obtaining jewelry insurance—timely advice on the holiday.
- Eastmill FCU helped members prepare for tax season by recommending that they utilize direct deposit for their tax refunds and reminding them that it is the safest and most convenient way to receive their money.
- On social media, Empeople CU shared why it’s important to start saving for retirement as early as possible.
- In support of the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland, Evergreen CU encouraged members to consider sharing their love with adoptable pets through the Animal Refuge League’s Valentine’s Day card fundraiser.
- Five County CU held their 68th Annual Meeting on Wednesday, February 26 in a hybrid format.
- Franklin-Somerset FCU has been appealing to their members’ “sweet side” by selling candy bars to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. Candy sales are going well!
- For $1, members of Gardiner FCU had the opportunity to buy paper hearts for display in the lobby to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Katahdin FCU’s Social Responsibility Committee partnered with local members to sponsor a bake sale to benefit the family of a child with a rare form of cancer.
- As artificial intelligence use becomes increasingly common, KSW FCU alerted members to be cautious of potential fake content used in scams, including deepfake videos that look and sound like the person portrayed.
- Employees of KV FCU celebrated Random Acts of Kindness Week in a big way by donating to charity, paying for strangers’ tolls, allowing someone to go ahead of them in line, and through many other acts to spread kindness and generosity.
- Lincoln Maine FCU’s staff took the time to write down all the things they love about their members on paper hearts and used them to decorate the lobby in advance of the Valentine’s Day holiday.
- Lisbon Community FCU began accepting applications for their Rochel “Russ” Livernois Memorial Scholarship Fund. 2025 high school seniors who are planning to attend a university, college or vocational school can apply for one of four scholarships.
- Maine Family FCU served as a track sponsor for the U.S. Ice Cross Association’s USIX Cup Series at Lost Valley.
- Maine Savings FCU is offering ten scholarships of $2,000 each to college-bound members.
- On their website, Maine Solutions FCU encouraged members to join the fight against hunger and help feed hungry neighbors in need.
- On February 18, Maine State CU hosted “Treats & Eats” at their Waterville, Gray, and Augusta branches. This fundraiser of baked goods and crockpot dishes raised important funds for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Tiombe, Tena, Lori, Kaitlyn, Reeva, and Krystyne from Midcoast FCU assisted at Freeport Community Services’ “Freezin for a Reason” annual “Freeze Out!” to raise money for their food programs.
- Milestones FCU’s website cautioned members of text scams they may receive and encouraged them to not interact with the messages and promptly block the scammer’s number.
- On February 8, area scouts assembled together to earn merit badges at “Badge College” in Augusta, where New Dimensions FCU CEO Ryan Poulin taught a Personal Management Merit Badge class.
- Congratulations are in order for the team at NorState FCU for receiving their AARP BankSafe training seal!
- February 28 brought OTIS FCU’s free ski night to members at Spruce Mountain.
- On February 13, Oxford FCU hosted a free financial class all about creating a workable budget at Larry Labonte Recovery Center.
- Staff of Penobscot County FCU recognized National Wear Red Day on February 7 in honor of women’s cardiovascular health.
- PeoplesChoice CU’s Maine Merits Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for this year.
- On Valentine’s Day, Sabattus Regional CU gave back to their community by selling Yankee Candle products and roses to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger and Special Olympics.
- After 34 years living out the People Helping People philosophy both personally and in his role at the credit union, Saco Valley CU wished Steve Curran well as he entered the next chapter. Congratulations, Steve, on your well-deserved retirement!
- Seaboard FCU’s Marketing Coordinator Kylie taught lessons from Junior Achievement to students at the Miles Lane School.
- In advance of St. Patrick’s Day, Sebasticook Valley FCU began an in-branch “Feeling Lucky” raffle for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- Staff from The County FCU attended the United Way Gala, excited to offer support to their local community.
- On February 4, a team of Town & Country FCU employees rolled up their sleeves to volunteer at the Preble Street Food Security Hub in South Portland to prepare and pack meals to help feed our neighbors in need across 26 communities.
- Trademark FCU was a Bronze Star Partner for Make-A-Wish Maine’s Share the Power of a Wish telethon, which raised over $129,000 to grant wishes for kids across Maine.
- On February 26, TruChoice FCU hosted a Homebuyer Happy Hour in Biddeford for those looking to learn more about the process.
- Hope St. Germain at University CU was awarded the UCU Greatest of All Time (GOAT) Award for Q4 for embodying selflessness, care, and professionalism. Congratulations, Hope!
- Winthrop Area FCU shared important tips all month on social media to help members avoid falling victim to fraud.
