CU News & Events – August Edition


The heat was on this August as credit unions across Maine raced to embrace the last few weeks of summer! Between back-to-school donations and fundraising activities, our credit unions never had a dull moment. Here is a snapshot of what August sunshine brought to some of Maine’s credit unions:

  • Several Acadia FCU employees in Bangor participated in the Northern Light EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge and are continuing to collect donations for the cause until September 30. Donated funds will stay within the local Bangor community at the Lafayette Family Center Institute and Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center.
  • Atlantic FCU’s insurance team delivered backpacks and school supplies to children in need at Williams-Cone Elementary School in Topsham.
  • At its Ellsworth branch, Bangor FCU encouraged youth members to save by opening a Monty Moose account. New youth members even received a free lunchbox full of back-to-school goodies for signing up.
  • Brewer FCU was busy collecting school supply donations at their branches.
  • Capital Area FCU held a cornhole competition to benefit Special Olympics Maine. The winner received a lobster feast for two, along with other summer-themed items.
  • The 5th Annual Motorcycle Ride to End Hunger was a big success for Casco FCU! Twenty-four bikes participated in the ride on a beautiful summer day. A record-breaking $4,595 was raised from the event—$1,353.15 more than last year!
  • Changing Seasons FCU began preparations for their annual Bikes, Beans and Mean Machines motorcycle ride and car show. All money raised will go towards the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • The branches of Community CU collected donations in support of Make-A-Wish.
  • A team from Connected CU enjoyed the weather while participating in the Hospice Volunteers of Waterville Area Spring for Hope Golf Tournament.
  • cPort CU held their Member Appreciation Week August 8-12. They rotated serving a free lunch to members through each of their five branches all week and had multiple big giveaway items up for grabs.
  • John Schwartz, a member of Cumberland County FCU’s Board of Directors, celebrated his 25th anniversary on the Board. He fondly recalled many memories from his years of service. He is most proud of encouraging the early adoption of technology, as it put the credit union on the leading edge of IT development, and helped protect members and their privacy. Congratulations and thank you, John!
  • Dirigo FCU helped United Way of Androscoggin County pack over 1,000 backpacks in anticipation of the upcoming school year. Backpacks will be distributed to local schools and agencies.
  • Downeast CU welcomed members to their brand new Brewer location. The Bangor branch is permanently closed, and the team is excited to continue assisting members in the new space.
  • The summer newsletter from Eastmill FCU warned members of potential Microsoft, ISP, and anti-malware provider scams, noting how attackers may try to obtain personal information.
  • Evergreen CU’s Windham branch won two Windham Eagle Choice Awards: 2nd Place Mortgage Category and 1st Place Bank/Credit Union. Congratulations, Evergreen CU!
  • Five County CU sponsored the Brunswick Outdoor Arts Festival on August 20.
  • Early in the month, the team at Franklin-Somerset FCU wrapped up an incredibly successful gift drive that they organized in July to support the Maine Children’s Home for Little Wanderers. Thanks to their hard work and the generosity of their members, children in need will have a brighter Christmas this year!
  • Cash calendar winners were pulled all month long at Gardiner FCU.
  • The Scarborough branch of Infinity CU shopped for backpacks and filled them with all the necessary supplies to donate to Project G.R.A.C.E. for their Back-to-School Supply Drive in partnership with the Scarborough school system.
  • Katahdin FCU sponsored the Millinocket Memorial Library Summer Reading Program and participated in the End of Summer Festival, which featured games, giveaways, and lunch.
  • In their summer newsletter, KSW FCU shared the pros and cons of purchasing fixer-upper homes.
  • Ahead of the Sturgeon Stroll Art Walk, KV FCU sponsored a sturgeon for the Augusta Downtown Alliance project.
  • Lincoln Maine FCU supported students and teachers heading back to school by bringing breakfast, supplies, juice and coffee, and/or lunch to Mattanawcook Academy, Enfield Station Elementary School, Mattanawcook Junior High School, Ella P. Burr School, and Penobscot Valley High School.
  • To support the Campaign for Ending Hunger, Lisbon Community FCU drew summer basket raffle winners.
  • For the month of August, Maine Family FCU collected school supply donations for the children at Park Avenue Elementary School.
  • Maine Highlands FCU was a proud sponsor of the Maine Red Hot Dog Festival in Dexter on August 13.
  • A few groups from Maine Savings FCU joined the EMMC Champion the Cure Challenge on August 21.
  • Maine State CU employees Alex, Shane, Dan, and Amanda shared financial knowledge with Monmouth Academy for their RSU #2 Staff Workshop Day.
  • On August 26, Midcoast FCU presented a $1,000 check to Freeport Community Services from funds raised at their cornhole tournament.
  • Milestones FCU highlighted their experienced loan processors, Rebekah and Sarah, in their summer newsletter and website.
  • Monmouth FCU supported local food organizations by presenting donations to the Litchfield Food Pantry, the Greene Baptist Food Pantry, the United Church of Monmouth Food Pantry, and RCAM – Rural Community Action Ministry.
  • New Dimensions FCU proudly announced the results of their 8th Annual Cruisin’ for a Cure Car Show with a record-breaking $30,240.66 raised for the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
  • NorState FCU engaged the community by attending Music in the Park, feeding the Aroostook Trusses, golfing at the tournament held by the Aroostook Chapter of Maine Credit Unions, and more!
  • Northeast CU celebrated the one-year anniversary of its President/CEO Chris Parker’s arrival at the credit union with the launch of a new mission: “To enrich and nourish the lives of others: our members, our employees, and our communities.”
  • On August 20, OTIS FCU’s 2022 Yard Sale for Ending Hunger raised a record-breaking $2,463.45.
  • On August 13, Lisa, Tammy, and Julie from Oxford FCU helped Mexico Public Library pack up books ahead of the move to its new location at the River Valley Recreation Center.
  • Penobscot County FCU employees staffed a rest stop and served as a sponsor of EMMC’s Champion the Cure Challenge.
  • This August, all PeoplesChoice CU branch locations collected school supplies and donations for elementary schools in southern Maine.
  • Sabattus Regional CU hosted a donation box in their lobby for the Community Cares Backpack Program, encouraging members to donate to those in need.
  • Saco Valley CU served as a Silver Level sponsor for this year’s River Jam Festival. The event provided a free day of fun for families alongside the Saco River.
  • The Bucksport Arts Festival was sponsored by Seaboard FCU.
  • On August 14, Sebasticook Valley FCU held their 3rd Annual Giant Yard Sale at their Newport branch. Funds collected were given to the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
  • The County FCU promoted Mortgage Loan Officer Dustin Graham to Branch Manager of its Caribou office. Congratulations, Dustin!
  • For the third year in a row, Town & Country FCU partnered with the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland (ARLGP) to celebrate DOGUST! This month-long event highlights dogs that are up for adoption on their Facebook and Instagram pages. The credit union made a weekly contribution to support the work of ARLGP.
  • Trademark FCU employee April celebrated 33 years with the credit union! Thank you, April, for your many years of dedication to serving your members and embracing the People Helping People philosophy!
  • Lori and Evan from TruChoice FCU celebrated their five-year work-a-versary. Congratulations, Lori and Evan!
  • University CU staff helped welcome incoming University of Maine students to campuses across the state.
  • In support of the Winthrop Community Fund, Winthrop Area FCU held a back-to-school raffle. The winner received a brand new kids L.L. Bean backpack and lunchbox stuffed with goodies!
