CU News & Events – April Edition

April was full of community connections, financial wellness, volunteer support, and engaging activities for credit unions across Maine! From Credit Union Youth Month and National Financial Literacy Month offerings to annual meetings and fraud prevention, Maine’s credit unions remained focused on providing top-tier member service—always prioritizing their members’ best interests. Below, our League offers a snapshot of what some of our credit unions were up to during the month of April. 

  • Acadia FCU held a big book sale, with proceeds supporting Campaign for Ending Hunger efforts. At the end of the sale, all books were half-priced and members could fill a bag with books for just $5.  
  • Hillary, Financial Wellness Specialist at Ancorum CU, hosted a workshop at People Plus Maine on financial safety for older adults, including information about common scams and what to do if you fall victim. 
  • Josh is Atlantic FCU’s latest Shine Bright Award recipient for making an impact at the Scarborough branch with a confidence, resourcefulness, and welcoming energy that creates genuine interactions with members. Congratulations, Josh! 
  • As part of our industry’s ongoing effort to fight fraud, Bangor FCU shared a multitude of information online about fraud and scams. 
  • At their 66th Annual Meeting, Brewer FCU was honored to recognize Carol McLaughlin for her deep commitment to the credit union—with a nearly 40-year career and 20 years of volunteer service.  
  • Capital Area FCU participated in hosting the Financial Fitness Fair at Cony High School on April 9. 
  • During school vacation week, Casco FCU invited youth members to enjoy activities with Monty Moose in both branches, at the Gorham Aroma Joe’s location, and at the Baxter Memorial Library in celebration of Credit Union Youth Month. 
  • Central Maine FCU encouraged youth savings with a drawing to win a Razor scooter. Any child that deposited money into their account would have their name entered automatically. At the beginning of April, they also facilitated a coloring contest for Monty Moose account holders, with one lucky winner taking home an Easter basket. 
  • On April 25, Community CU offered their Free Recycle Day to the community, supporting local organizations, protecting members’ personal information, and giving items a second life instead of ending up in a landfill. Bottle and can donations were also collected for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Connected CU gave members under 18 years of age the chance to Spin to Win a prize during Youth Week if they made a deposit or opened an account. 
  • Two employees from cPort CU spent a morning at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston meeting members of the community and sharing about all that cPort has to offer. 
  • Cumberland County FCU continued their Food Pantry Friday segment on social media, highlighting the important work of the Stroudwater Food Pantry, The Locker Project, the North Berwick Food Pantry, and Kaydenz Kitchen Food Pantry and Transitional Shelter. 
  • Dirigo FCU welcomed Slugger from the Portland Sea Dogs to a couple of their branches in honor of Youth Financial Literacy Month. 
  • Downeast CU challenged youth members to build strong financial foundations—encouraging them to sharpen their skills for a chance to win $100. 
  • New Monty Moose accountholders at Eastmill FCU received a free piggy bank to take home and decorate, honoring Credit Union Youth Month. 
  • Empeople CU hosted an Empeople Power Hour on April 8, where they guided attendees step-by-step through tips for spring homebuying. 
  • Evergreen CU sponsored and attended the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland’s Brews & Bites fundraiser at The Highroller Lobster Co. on April 14 and 15. A portion of the restaurant’s sales proceeds supported the Refuge League’s important work. 
  • A pet supply drive took place at Gardiner FCU to benefit the Kennebec Valley Humane Society. 
  • Fraud Friday continued on Great Falls FCU’s social media channels, sharing alerts regarding tax identity theft, imposter scams, and marketplace payment scams. 
  • In honor of Patriots’ Day and the Boston Marathon, HRCU gave away two tickets to the April 20 Red Sox game. 
  • Katahdin FCU sponsored a drawing for an Easter basket to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • KSW FCU staff participated in the Sexual Assault Awareness 1 in 5K. 
  • KV FCU served as the Community Champion Sponsor of the KV YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day. 
  • Staff from Lighthouse CU volunteered at the Marshwood High School Financial Fitness Fair.  
  • Youth members of Lincoln Maine FCU surpassed the credit union’s goal of $500 in youth account deposits during the month of April! One lucky account holder will win a tablet. 
  • Chocolate candy bars were sold at Lisbon Community FCU to raise money for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Maine Family FCU was thrilled to announce they donated $30,000 to help Trinity Jubilee Center install a walk-in freezer to make a meaningful difference for the growing demand from community members relying on the Center’s offerings. 
  • Maine Highlands FCU funded the purchase of two new thermal imaging cameras for the Brownville Fire Rescue, which helps firefighters locate victims in fires or smoke-filled environments, identify hidden pockets of fire, assess structural stability, and assist in search efforts during wilderness rescue situations. 
  • A group from Maine Savings FCU joined the Hike for the Homeless, helping raise awareness and demonstrating the People Helping People spirit. 
  • Maine Solutions FCU invited members to save the date for their upcoming Annual Meeting on May 20. 
  • Maine State CU put on another successful Feed ME 5K to End Hunger on April 25! The sun was shining as many community members rallied together behind this important cause. 
  • Employees of Midcoast FCU gave their time to help run a Financial Fitness Fair at Mt. Ararat High School on April 28. 
  • Youth members of Milestones FCU had the chance to win a Maine State Park pass during Credit Union Youth Month. Opening a new account gave them five entries into the drawing, and an account deposit provided three entries. Additionally, all new youth accounts opened received a $5 deposit from the credit union. 
  • New Dimensions FCU announced their seven 2025 annual award winners who consistently go above and beyond in serving their members, team, and community. Winners included: Donna Keaten (Member First Award: The Service Excellence Advocate), Rachel Oliver (Lender of the Year: The Financial Educator), Sharon Storti (Volunteer of the Year: The Community Champion), Jen Corson (Integrity Award: The Trusted Champion), Tasha Crowell (Teamwork Award: The Collaborative Spirit), Amanda Bernardini (Accountability Award: The Ownership Leader), and Dani Farmer (Lead With Respect Award: The Empathetic Leader). Congratulations to all! 
  • NorState FCU served as a proud sponsor of the Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce’s Administrative Professional Conference. 
  • OTIS FCU President & CEO Chris Bouchard led story time at Community Concepts Jay Early Learning Center, sharing a story written by the grandfather of an OTIS FCU employee. 
  • April 6 held a groundbreaking for Oxford FCU’s new Augusta branch location, which is expected to open in early January. 
  • PeoplesChoice CU shared that they are the official presenting sponsor for Channel 8’s Spring into Hope Fashion Show, a fundraiser in support of Sweetser that will take place on May 7 at Dunegrass Country Club. 
  • Families of 2026 graduates can now pay $10 to feature their graduate on the road sign of Sabattus Regional CU, serving as a fundraiser for the Campaign for Ending Hunger. 
  • Saco Valley CU offered the community a free Recycle Day Drive-Thru event on April 25. 
  • To celebrate Credit Union Youth Month, Seaboard FCU gave $25 each to every new youth membership and youth checking account opened in April. 
  • Sebasticook Valley FCU’s Mindy Nyman wrote an article for The Piscataquis Observer about the importance of financial wellness—perfectly timed for April’s National Financial Literacy Month.  
  • The County FCU facilitated a giveaway in honor of Earth Month, complete with a curated basket of goodies from Home Ec. Market. 
  • Town & Country FCU sponsored the South Portland Parks and Recreation’s second annual South Portland Earth Day Resource Fair. 
  • Trademark FCU is supporting the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital through a raffle to benefit Miracles in Motion. The winner will be announced on May 15. 
  • TruChoice FCU posted a blog that highlights simple strategies to teach children about money. 
  • Special Olympics Maine athletes were cheered on by University CU staff, who assisted at the swim meet held at the Bangor Region YMCA. 
  • Winthrop Area FCU celebrated Tammy Beland’s 25th work anniversary and Angela Frost’s 30th work anniversary. Congratulations, Tammy and Angela, and thank you for your dedication!
