As spring took off across Maine, credit unions sprang into action to support their members and communities. From Credit Union Youth Month and Financial Literacy Month festivities to fundraisers and big celebrations, April held no dull moments for our credit unions! Our League provides a look at what some of our credit unions were up to in April below.
- Staff from Acadia FCU attended the Top O’ Maine Trade Show on April 26 and 27 in Madawaska, bringing with them fundraising opportunities in support of Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. Their booth helped fight hunger with the sale of 50/50 tickets, through ticket purchases to play Plinko for a prize, and by sharing information on hunger in Maine with attendees.
- With fraud an ever-present threat, Atlantic FCU shared a new blog post highlighting the top fraud trends of 2025 that members need to know about.
- Bangor FCU presented the following food pantries each with $5,000 to support the important work they do to feed those in both the Hancock and Waldo County communities facing food insecurity: Belfast Soup Kitchen, Hancock County Technical Center’s Food Pantry, and Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry.
- On April 20, Brewer FCU celebrated its 65th anniversary. The credit union also provided CHEFS food pantry with a donation to help them feed people in need in the community.
- Capital Area FCU’s Community Caterpillar officially returned and they are hoping to see it grow. For a $5 donation, supporters can add their own rock to the caterpillar. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Maine.
- Despite the weather, a team from Casco FCU participated in the annual Gorham Cleans Up! event hosted by the Gorham Conservation Commission.
- Central Maine FCU added a brand-new CardControl feature to their mobile banking app, providing members instant access to everything they need to manage their cards.
- Are you looking for a meaningful way to give back? Coast Line CU shared information on its website on how to apply to be a credit union volunteer.
- Community CU joined credit union peers from the Kennebec Valley Chapter in hosting a Financial Fitness Fair at Cony High School.
- The Easter bunny visited Connected CU and left behind 80 eggs for the team to find.
- cPort CU offered a behind-the-scenes look at the construction progress for their Lewiston branch. The credit union looks forward to serving the community there soon.
- A group from Cumberland County FCU helped put on a Financial Fitness Fair for Bonny Eagle students.
- Dirigo FCU launched registration for their upcoming Disc Golf Tournament to benefit the Campaign for Ending Hunger, taking place on June 14.
- In honor of Credit Union Youth Month, Downeast CU invited youth and young adult members (aged 13-21) to complete their challenge and enter their $100 giveaway.
- Eastmill FCU alerted members of a text scam asking for banking login credentials, clarifying that the credit union would never reach out requesting this kind of information.
- Throughout April, Empeople CU celebrated Credit Union Youth Month with a series of short videos and quotes on social media from a large variety of staff members who shared valuable financial advice and tips for success.
- Evergreen CU provided multiple local hunger relief organizations with much-needing funding during April, totaling $15,000. Thanks to Evergreen’s generosity, the Windham Food Pantry, CrossWalk Community Outreach, MaineHealth’s Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, and the South Portland Food Cupboard will continue serving Maine’s hungry population.
- St. John’s Catholic School put on a special performance of “The Sound of Music” thanks to Five County CU’s sponsorship.
- Franklin-Somerset FCU’s crew looked sharp in matching maroon shirts at their Annual Meeting on April 19. The event was well-attended by their membership, and their own Mindy Ewig provided scrumptious scones and muffins for those attending. Following the business portion of the meeting, they played a fraud-themed game of Bingo and reported that $250,000 was given back to our membership in 2024 for the second year in a row. They also held drawings for multiple prizes and money.
- To help their friends at the Kennebec Valley Humane Society, Gardiner FCU held a monthlong pet supply drive. The credit union provided a list of the Society’s most-needed items.
- Great Falls FCU encouraged members to utilize online and mobile banking during their closure in observance of Patriots’ Day.
- HRCU recognized Credit Union Youth Month with exciting activities for kids and teens all throughout April, and they encouraged potential members to join by providing $5 towards new youth savings accounts opened.
- Katahdin FCU staff participated in a Cybersecurity Basics Workshop held at the Millinocket Memorial Library.
- KSW FCU sold popcorn to fundraise for Special Olympics Maine and the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- April 26 brought the Kennebec Valley YMCA’s “Healthy Kids Day,” and KV FCU served as their Community Champion Sponsor.
- Maine locations of Lighthouse CU teamed up with the Locker Project to fight hunger in Maine, collecting boxes of macaroni and cheese to support student meals during April vacation.
- Youth members of Lincoln Maine FCU enjoyed participating in the “My Linc Dollar” design contest for a chance at winning a prize. Members submitted their own drawings of dollar bills with Linc the Loon on it.
- Lisbon Community FCU encouraged “Big Savings for Little Dreamers” during Credit Union Youth Month, promoting the educational benefits of their Monty Moose Youth Savings Program.
- Maine Family FCU delivered the diapers collected during their March Diaper Drive to the High Street Food Pantry in Auburn. In total, 671 diapers in various sizes were donated to help families in need.
- On April 21, Maine Highlands FCU held their Annual Meeting in Dexter.
- The brand-new Stillwater branch of Maine Savings FCU saw a ribbon-cutting ceremony on April 18, marking one month of serving members at this location.
- The end of April held Maine State CU’s big annual Feed ME 5K Walk to End Hunger. It’s not too late to donate! The credit union will continue collecting donations through the end of May to support this important cause.
- Chandra, Lori, and Nadia from Midcoast FCU spent the first Friday of the month assisting Freeport Community Services in preparing shepherd’s pie for their “First Friday Free Lunch Program.”
- New Dimensions FCU’s Waterville and Skowhegan locations hosted an Easter Basket Raffle, with baskets up for grabs in both branches. Proceeds were directed to Special Olympics Maine and the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- NorState FCU excitedly announced the return of their Music in the Park series this summer, taking place once again at Bicentennial Park.
- The Frosty Paw ice cream truck visited OTIS FCU on April 25, and the credit union handed out coupons for free ice cream to members aged 15 and under in honor of Credit Union Youth Month.
- Oxford FCU sponsored the Mountain Valley High School JMG Program’s Make a Difference Night 2025—a fundraising opportunity to benefit the Larry Labonte Recovery Center and the River Valley Healthy Community Coalition.
- Highlighting the 310% increase in visitors at the Biddeford Food Pantry since 2021, PeoplesChoice CU encouraged members to utilize the Round-Up for Charity program with their debit card purchases to support their local pantries—among other hunger relief organizations.
- As a way to provide assistance to Tommy’s Feral Feline Friends, Sabattus Regional CU hosted a bake sale full of goodies just before Easter.
- Saco Valley CU partnered with a local favorite, Pizza by Alex, on April 15 to donate $1 for every pizza sold to the credit union’s fundraising efforts for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- On April 15, members of Seaboard FCU’s team participated in JA (Junior Achievement) in a Day at Wagner Middle School, helping eighth grade students develop essential skills for success.
- As many Mainers struggle to balance budgets amidst rising costs, Sebasticook Valley FCU offered a new blog with smart tips to save money on your grocery bill, highlighting how the credit union also has tools and resources to help.
- The County FCU shared in the excitement of their own Sarah Blackstone and Cherie Gendreau, who graduated from the Young Professionals Institute at the University of Maine’s Presque Isle campus. Congratulations on this incredible accomplishment, Sarah and Cherie!
- Town & Country FCU served as a presenting sponsor of the 31st Annual Swish-Out Childhood Cancer Challenge in support of the Maine Children’s Cancer Program.
- Youth savings was encouraged at Trademark FCU, who matched up to $25 of the initial deposit for the first 20 youth accounts opened in April.
- The Portland branch of TruChoice FCU had their annual training with the Portland Police Department, who brought with them a special guest: Archie, an 11-week-old emotional support dog.
- UCU team members were busy presenting checks to various food pantries in the Southern Maine region this months. Donations were provided to Wayside Food Programs, Preble Street, USM Campus Food Pantry, Gorham Food Pantry, and Stroudwater Food Pantry.
- Winthrop Area FCU warned members not to click on any links in suspicious texts as more scammers attempt to collect sensitive information by posing as a trusted financial institution.
