Spending time with our elected officials is an important way to showcase the credit union difference and communicate our policy priorities. This week, the League took advantage of two opportunities to engage directly with Senator King—both in Maine and in Washington, DC.

Senator Angus King & Krista Simonis, League Governmental Affairs Director.

On Monday morning, the New England Council hosted Senator King for a special event in Portland where he provided a Capitol Hill briefing to attendees. Krista Simonis, League Governmental Affairs Director, and Ellen Parent, League Compliance Director, attended this dialogue session, where he discussed many critical issues facing Congress, including rising partisanship in the Senate, the turmoil in Gaza, and TikTok.

Later that day, Robert Caverly, League President of Advocacy & Outreach, joined Joann Bisson, CEO at Oxford FCU, and Jennifer Hogan, CEO at Community CU, at a fundraiser for Senator King at Credit Union House in Washington, DC. Senator King was joined by special guest and supporter, Senator Brian Schatz of Hawaii. This event provided a more intimate setting to engage with each senator and hear their thoughts on what is happening in Congress—both from a policy perspective and an electoral perspective. Senator King is seeking his third term in November.

“Monday represented a unique opportunity for the League to engage with Senator King directly,” said Caverly. “Attending both events helps keep Maine credit unions top of mind for the Senator and his staff. We also appreciated that Senator King requested to host his DC event at Credit Union House. This location is a valuable resource for our movement; offering a friendly, comfortable space for Leagues and credit unions to host meetings and events like this. I was also pleased to share the experience with two dedicated credit unions representatives who were willing to offer their time to support our advocacy efforts.”
