Community CU Helps Feed Those in Need

Community CU is a strong supporter of the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger. In addition to raising money for this important statewide initiative, Community CU supports local organizations that are combating hunger in the greater Lewiston-Auburn area. This month, Community CU presented checks to two deserving non-profits, Maine Community Integration (MCI) and New Beginnings, to support their programs.

Founded in 2006, MCI promotes cultural understanding and equal opportunities to asylum seekers in Lewiston and Auburn. Community CU’s $250 donation will help MCI’s clients receive nutritious food and goods for themselves and their families.

New Beginnings has served runaway and homeless youth in crisis since 1980. Approximately 700 teens and young adults receive services from New Beginnings each year through its programs, shelter, transitional living center, and outreach. Community CU presented New Beginnings with a check for $500 to help New Beginnings provide food for the teens and young adults participating in their programs.

“Addressing hunger and food insecurity for young people is one important way that we help homeless youth find the stability and opportunities they need to become successful adults,” said Chris Bickwell, Executive Director for New Beginnings.

Community CU also partners with New Beginnings on financial literacy and downtown initiatives.
