A Message from Elise Baldacci: International Credit Union Day Reminds Us All About the Opportunities Credit Unions Provide

Elise Baldacci

Every year, credit unions across the country and around the world come together on the third Thursday of October to celebrate our industry’s history, contributions, and commitment to people over profits. In advance of International Credit Union Day on October 17, I want to thank you for being a part of our cooperative movement. The work you do makes a meaningful difference in the financial lives of your members and in the communities you serve.

Being a part of the credit union system means you are serving as a catalyst for positive change in Maine and abroad. Over four hundred million members worldwide put their trust in their local credit union. Here at home, they put their trust in you. Membership in our state is strong (and growing!) because Mainers recognize that credit unions are people investors and opportunity creators. The trust Mainers put into credit unions should be celebrated on International Credit Union Day and throughout the year.

People Helping People is not a gimmick; it is a philosophy and a responsibility that you, your credit union colleagues, and our League take seriously. Offering dynamic and affordable products, protecting consumers from fraud, and feeding our neighbors in need are just some of the ways credit unions promote financial health and prosperity for all every day through our international movement.

I have been a credit union member since I was young, and now my kids are credit union members, as well. I am pleased we are a part of this global family that creates space for everyone—no matter their background, geographic location, or financial situation.

For 76 years, International Credit Union Day has been a special time for credit unions and their members to come together to highlight the credit union difference. No matter what you have planned, whether it is coordinating a fundraiser to benefit the $100,000 Ending Hunger Challenge, facilitating a Financial Fitness Fair at your local high school, or volunteering for a community initiative―enjoy the day and all that it signifies. Being a part of a global movement that exists to serve others is worthy of a celebration!
