September 2017: One-On-One with Todd Mason, President of the Maine Credit Union League

September 2017:
By Todd Mason, President of the Maine Credit Union League

The summer went by far too quickly, didn't it?

Some of my favorite moments of it were spent hiking at Acadia, along the ocean or on the trail by home. Aside from just enjoying a little bit of downtime while doing those hikes, they gave me time to reflect. A recurring theme of those reflections, perhaps inspired by the vista of Bar Harbor, is the importance of taking a 360 degree view.

The world is too complex for a single approach.

As an example, consider some of our shared efforts over the past few months. Our Young Professional Network came together to develop their leadership skills, while building bikes for kids in need. We were represented on Maine Public Radio where I promoted the Credit Union Difference. We came together to help state employees during the brief shutdown. We held working groups with you to get a better understanding of foreclosure, which will inform our legislative strategy moving forward. We voiced our stance with the NCUA on the stabilization fund. Most recently, we collectively donated over $20,000 (and growing) to help our colleagues that were hit by Tropical Storm Harvey.

And, this is only a fraction of the list. But, I share it to illustrate a point. Namely, the need for a multi-prong, collaborative strategy is essential for success, and that will be the key takeaway at the Management Roundtable coming up September 19-20.  At the roundtable, we'll cover topics ranging from cybersecurity and fintechs to millennials and competitive differentiation. I'll provide perspectives on the current state of the Credit Union Movement here in Maine and nationally, and where we could be heading. I'll also share some of the strategies we will be pursuing, and elicit your input to help ensure together we are focused on the right things.

I hope to see you there, get the benefit of your ideas and collaborative discussion, and find out how you spent your summer.
