Legendary Opening Speaker, past legislative leaders, and hosts of popular political TV show will all be at the 2017 Maine CU League Legislative Forum

When it comes to political investigative journalism, the names Woodward and Bernstein are legendary.  Though they first came to prominence for their work in reporting on Watergate, both have continued to have significant roles in the political conversation for more than four decades and counting.  On Wednesday, November 8, one half of the legendary journalism duo, Carl Bernstein, will be in Maine as the Opening Speaker at the Maine CU League's Legislative Forum in Freeport.

Carl Bernstein is a frequent guests on political shows.  He is pictured here on 'Meet the Press'.

In his two opening sessions, Bernstein will cover a wide range of topics including the political discourse in the country today, politics and the press, and preview how the current environment could impact the 2018 mid-term elections.  He will also save time for Q & A, and offer reflections and anecdotes from his years covering national politics.

After Bernstein, former Maine legislative leaders gather for a panel discussion on the role and importance of leadership in Augusta, what compromise means, and the legislative process.  Former Senate Majority Leader, Jon Courtney, who is now a one of the Maine Credit Union League's contract lobbyists, will moderate a panel discussion that includes former Senate President, Kevin Raye; past Speaker of the House, John Richardson; and former Floor Leader, Mary Small.  Together, they spent years making things happen in the State House, and the opportunity to hear them share their experiences and insight will delight the audience.

The 2017 Forum concludes with an on-site version of the popular Maine politcal TV show, The Maine Event.  Co-hosts Senator Roger Katz, and Hannah Pingree, a former Speaker of the House, will offer an abbreviated version of their show, which airs on Maine Public Television.  They will discuss the hot topics and issues in Maine politics, and provide an early preview of the 2018 elections in Maine including the Governor's race, the Senate race, and control of the Legislature.

Spend a day talking and learning about national and state politics at the Maine CU League's signature political event of the year, the Legislative Forum.  Registration is underway.  To register online, click here; download a brochure; email Susan Erlandson; or call Member Services at 800.442.6715.
