For volunteer training, helping hands abound

After an individual becomes a credit union volunteer, the challenge is how to keep up on new regulations, fudiciary requirements, trends and certification.  Fortunately, the Maine CU League, the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) and others have a variety of training options and resources available to help volunteers stay current and informed in order to best serve their credit union.

Throughout the year, the League offers various training for volunteers including webinars, training series and the popular Volunteers' Conference held each fall.  "The Volunteers' Conference is our biggest event each year for volunteers because it provides an opportunity for volunteers to come together and attend thought-provoking sessions from experienced speakers on important topics and issues that can help volunteers better perform their duties, as well as valuable networking opportunities to share knowledge and best practices with other volunteers," remarked Cheryl Lancaster, EVP of Member Services for the Maine CU League.

Additionally, CUNA has several programs providing education for volunteers including the Certified Credit Union Volunteer (CCUV) program.  The CCUV is designed to help volunteers acquire a firm grasp on credit union operations and board leadership as well as the credit union movement as a whole.  More information on the CCUV can be found by clicking here.  CUNA also coordinates the Volunteer Achievement Program (VAP) that has a series of online courses specifically designed for volunteer training.  Click here to learn more about VAP offerings.

"The expectations for volunteers has changed significantly over the years including the need for increased training and education.  The League, CUNA and our partnership with the CU Webinar Network offers some great options to help volunteers fulfill these requirements," added Lancaster.
