Fighting cancer has a friend in Maine CUs

From children to adults, cancer remains a fight for a cure.  Though progress is being made on some cancers, much work remains to be done.  In order to continue the research and effort, funding is essential.  In keeping with the commitment of credit unions to support the needs of their communities in a variety of ways, raising funds for cancer is an issue in which Maine CUs remain active and significant contributors. The support from CUs didn't only involve raising funds but also providing volunteers, organizers and 'cheerleaders' to champion the cause.

For Town & Country FCU, their support of the Maine Cancer Foundation has been ongoing for a number of years now.  "We all know someone who has had cancer, and doing something to not only help them but many others is important to us," explained Dave Libby, President/CEO of Town & Country FCU.  Ryan Poulin, President/CEO of New Dimensions FCU, said his CU has a similar connection to helping to raise funds for children's cancer.  "From participating in the annual maine Children's Cancer Program's Walk to helping our long-time member, Sylvio Normandeau, meet his goal of raising $500K for MCCP, our CU has gotten behind this effort."  John Reed, President/CEO of Maine Savings FCU, said his staff and volunteers go above and beyond to support EMMC's Champion the Cure event.  "We don't just sponsor it, we get involved in it."

Town & Country FCU had a strong group of participants and volunteers represented at the Tri for a Cure event in South Portland in July including President/CEO Dave Libby (pictured far right), who volunteered at the event.  The CU's Tri Team raised nearly $13,000 for the Maine Cancer Foundation.

New Dimensions FCU's Annual Cruisin' for a Cure Car Show revved up another outstanding result.  The show, which was held in June, raised more than $12,000 for the Maine Children's Cancer Program.  The staff is pictured here presenting the check, on behalf of long-time member and MCCP champion, Sylvio Normandeau (center), to representatives from MCCP.  Ryan Poulin, President/CEO of the CU, is directly at Sylvio's left.

Prior to the bikes hitting the road, lots of help is needed to get participants registered at the Annual Champion the Cure fundraiser with EMMC.  In addition to being a significant sponsor, Maine Savings FCU also provided staff to help with the registration for this year's event, which was held last month in Bangor.
