As previously reported, nearly 20% of the 2017 'Best Places to Work In Maine' recipients were credit unions or related organizations. Even more impressive, a quarter of the companies and organizations recognized in the Top 10 for Small or Medium Sized companies were credit unions. "It really says a lot about the culture of credit unions, not just in terms of how they operate as member-owned, financial cooperatives, but as employers, too, when so many are recognized for how they treat employees," remarked Todd Mason, President of the Maine Credit Union League.
For Small Companies (15-49 employees), Sabattus Regional CU was the highest ranking CU at #5. Some of the ways in which the CU treats employees special include having an entire Employee Appreciation Week annually. Additionally, management hands out high fives to recognize employees who go above and beyond. TruChoice FCU ranked #7 in the same category. One of the innovative ways that the CU celebrates employees include its TruSpirit peer recognition, which rewards employees with prizes and gift cards.
For Medium Companies (50-249 employees), Down East CU came in as the Top CU at #4. One of the focuses of the CU when it comes to employees is employee health. As a result, the CU provides gym reimbursements to employees, fresh fruit and water daily. The CU also offers paid three-day weekends to staff, as well. At Evergreen CU, which was ranked #7 in the category, the CU empowers managers to reward staff with 'on the spot rewards'. The CU also coordinates Pig-Out Days for employees, holiday festivities and mix-and-mingles with all staff. Finally, Infinity FCU also placed in the Top 10 in the category, coming in at #10. One of the innovative ways in empowers employees is through its Random Acts of Kindness program, which provides each branch with a monthly stipend to be used at the employees' discretion to perform random acts of kindness in the community.
So, while Maine credit unions are the best choice for financial services in the state, more and more they are becoming known as the best choice for a workplace in the state, too.
