On February 14, Jake Holmes, the League’s Financial Literacy Outreach Coordinator, will be in Augusta to testify before the Committee on Education & Cultural Affairs in support of L.D. 160, “An Act To Add Instruction in Personal Finance to the Statewide System of Learning Results.” The bill would require the Department of Education to add instruction in personal finance to the statewide system of learning results.

Holmes’ testimony will express strong support for financial literacy initiatives and highlight what Maine’s credit unions are doing to teach young adults about money management and financial accountability. Since 2004, over 53,000 students have participated in our credit union network’s Financial Fitness Fairs – a number that will grow at the end of the current school year.

“Ensuring our young people are equipped with the money management skills they need to be successful adults is an endeavor worth pursuing,” said Holmes. “Financial literacy is a topic I am personally and professionally passionate about and I am looking forward to addressing the committee in support of this legislation.”
