Politics was top of mind for attendees participating at this year’s Legislative Forum, held on October 4 at the Harraseeket Inn in Freeport.  Political strategist and CNN commentator Paul Begala served as the event’s keynote speaker.  Begala entertained the audience with stories about growing up in Texas, the grandson of an immigrant maid from Hungary; the $5,000 his wife borrowed from her local credit union to help him open his consulting firm with business partner, James Carville; and his personal journey to the White House.

Begala also addressed the current political environment and the divisiveness that exists today.  He encouraged the audience to “reward compromise” and to follow his friend, retired General Colin Powell’s advice to elect “super citizens” instead of “super politicians.”

Before departing, Begala shared his hopes for the future and his belief that America can heal from these tumultuous times.  He said America’s differences are the country’s greatest asset and urged Maine’s credit union network to help bridge the political divide.
