Between attending America’s Credit Unions’ Governmental Affairs Conference, fighting fraud, hosting Financial Fitness Fairs, and supporting communities across the state, Maine’s credit unions stayed busy and engaged throughout the month of March! Below, our League provides a brief overview of what some of our credit unions were up to.
- In addition to celebrating the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, Acadia FCU also enjoyed Team Appreciation Day at the beginning of the month with delicious cookies from Mary’s Tasty Treats.
- Staff from Atlantic FCU visited Long Creek Youth Development Center to provide financial education on budgeting for youth preparing to reenter society. They also had a table at the Center’s career fair and appreciated the enthusiasm and engagement from the kids they taught.
- Bangor FCU warned members of common text phishing scams to avoid, including fake outstanding EZ Pass toll balances and messages posing as the credit union about suspicious account activity meant to trick members into providing personal information.
- Brewer FCU encouraged sign-ups for the Bangor Chapter of CU’s 2nd annual Colors for a Cause color run that will take place in May.
- Get your art skills ready! Capital Area FCU is planning for the return of their Community Caterpillar. For just $5, people have the opportunity to decorate a rock with paint for display at the credit union. Capital Area FCU will have rocks, paint, and sealer available for purchase and/or use. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics Maine.
- April, Megan, and Patty from Casco FCU volunteered time with Good Shepherd Food Bank on March 12. Together, they packaged 3,097 pounds of food, which is equivalent to 2,580 meals.
- With increasing reports of tech support scams, Central Maine FCU took to social media to alert members to take caution if they receive a related text message or phone call, encouraging them to hang up and not provide any personal information.
- Coast Line CU’s newsletter outlined commons scams and how to spot them.
- Community CU participated in the Lewiston Auburn Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce’s B2B Tradeshow on March 27, enjoying engagement with their surrounding community of businesses.
- To celebrate incoming President Kristen Poremby’s first week with Connected CU, the Augusta team provided donations of towels, sheets, and blankets to Rescue Charlie’s Friends Dog Rescue in Woolwich—an organization that Poremby serves as the Volunteer and Event Coordinator. The Rescue works hard to save the lives of more than 600 dogs each year.
- cPort CU shared their excitement for being a 2025 Community Partner of Catholic Charities of Maine.
- With EZ Pass text scams on the rise, Cumberland County FCU brought it to members’ attention.
- To recognize Pi Day, Dirigo FCU told members that much like pi goes on forever, small investments also can grow infinitely over time and compound interest. They encouraged starting small, staying consistent, and watching the savings multiply.
- As Downeast CU’s 2024-2025 Downeast Dunkers program wrapped up, the credit union was proud to share that they provided more than $23,000 in support to five schools within their served communities during the winter sports season!
- Eastmill FCU joined the Penobscot Chapter of CUs for the Financial Fitness Fair at Stearn’s High School in Millinocket.
- Heart of Maine United Way in Bangor thanked Empeople CU for supporting their baby wipe and diaper cream drive, which allows even more families access to these essentials.
- A portion of Evergreen CU’s 2024 Campaign for Ending Hunger funds were donated to CrossWalk Community Outreach in Naples.
- Five County CU hosted a power hour on March 22 during the Cares for Kids Radiothon, which raised $5,210. In total, the event raised over $403,000 for the MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.
- At Franklin-Somerset FCU, spring is the time when scholarship applications are top-of-mind! They issue five $1,000 scholarships for high school students in the school districts where their branches are located: Skowhegan, Madison, Carrabec, and Mt. Blue and Mt. Abram High Schools. Applications are available for the 2025 class at the guidance offices of the respective schools, and the application process is currently underway.
- Gardiner FCU served as a drop-off location for the local Tiger Food Pantry. With a weekly list change, the credit union stayed on top of collecting much-needed items for their nearby pantry and community members.
- Katahdin FCU also teamed up with the other credit unions in the Penobscot Chapter of CUs to sponsor a Financial Fitness Fair at Stearns High School in Millinocket. Roughly 160 students from six schools participated in the event.
- Alongside the Kennebec Valley Chapter of CUs, Julie and MacKenzie from KSW FCU hosted a booth at Gardiner High School’s Financial Fitness Fair on March 17.
- At the end of March, KV FCU wrapped their two-month drive to collect essential items for local families in need, which included things like toilet paper, toothpaste, laundry detergent, soaps, and other toiletries.
- Lighthouse CU donated a truckload of furniture to Gather to furnish the organization’s new space.
- On International Women’s Day, Lincoln Maine FCU gave all of their wonderful female employees a special shoutout, thanking them for the dedication and knowledge they bring to all they do.
- Ahead of the upcoming Tax Day, Lisbon Community FCU shared information on avoiding tax identity theft.
- Throughout March, Maine Family FCU held a Diaper Drive for the High Street Food Pantry in Auburn.
- In their newsletter, Maine Highlands FCU excitedly shared that across all six branches, their Soup, Chili, and Chowder Sale in February raised nearly $1,000 for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- All Maine Savings FCU branches collected donations for local domestic violence agencies, including Partners for Peace, Family Violence Project, Through These Doors, and Next Step Domestic Violence Project.
- Save the date! Maine Solutions FCU is hosting their Annual Meeting on May 21.
- At the end of the month, Maine State CU held their Annual Ending Hunger Breakfast, celebrating all who contributed to their collective impact on hunger in Maine throughout 2024. A special shoutout was given to Stacey Dow for her crucial role in making events like their annual breakfast and upcoming Feed ME 5K possible.
- Tena, Shannon, Neeley, Chandra, and Nadia from Midcoast FCU joined the Financial Fitness Fair at Morse High School in Bath, which saw participation from about 100 students.
- Milestones FCU mentioned members Kathy, Stephen, and Reggie on their website for being the winners of $50 prizes for filling out the member survey.
- The Waterville Soup Kitchen received a donation of over $1,200 from New Dimensions FCU.
- NorState FCU’s Tammy and Kim staffed a table at Northern Maine Community College’s job fair on March 27.
- The Craft Sale for Ending Hunger returned to OTIS FCU. Members could make purchases at the teller line to support hungry Mainers.
- Oxford FCU invited members to a Free Ski Night at Black Mountain of Maine on March 12.
- To support more than 3,700 kids across five different school districts, PeoplesChoice CU renewed their sponsorship of Sanford Mainers’ Boomer’s Bookworms Literacy Program.
- The Saco Meals Program saw meal sponsor Saco Valley CU help serve a favorite meal to the community.
- Seaboard FCU pulled the winner for their Cash Calendar fundraiser for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- At Sebasticook Valley FCU, a Feeling Lucky fundraiser generated funds for the Campaign for Ending Hunger.
- The County FCU brought Special Olympics athletes pizza, chips, beverages, and a goody bag for a special tournament send-off.
- Jessica and Laurie from Town & Country FCU’s Saco branch served 150 meals funded by the credit union at the Saco Meals Program.
- On March 21, Trademark FCU hosted a power hour for MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital’s Cares for Kids Radiothon, matching donations during their sponsored hour.
- TruChoice FCU is celebrating 70 years of serving their members by donating $700 each month to organizations in need. This month, they presented their donation to the York County Community Action Corporation to meet the urgent needs in the community.
- University CU volunteers cheered on exceptional athletes at the Bangor Special Olympics swim meet.
- Winthrop Area FCU recognized the Social Security Administration’s #SlamTheScam initiative by sharing red flags of fraud.
