October $100,000 Challenge to Raise Funds for Ending Hunger

Nothing is better than a Challenge that supports three initiatives Maine credit unions and their members care deeply about: Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, Good Shepherd Food Bank, and Special Olympics Maine. This October, the League is bringing back the $100,000 Challenge. By accepting our challenge, your credit union (and your members) will help us raise $100,000 in one month to benefit our Campaign for Ending Hunger.

Let’s Celebrate Collaboration and Cooperation Next Month

One of the reasons we shifted the Challenge to October was to better time it around International Credit Union Day—an occasion when our global movement will come together to celebrate One World Through Cooperative Finance. The ultimate goal of this special day is to raise awareness about the tremendous work that credit unions are doing around the world and in their communities. There is no better example of this than our shared Campaign.

We hope your credit union will support the $100,000 Challenge by donating to the Campaign and/or coordinating a fundraiser at your branches during the month of October. As we have done in year’s past, 25% percent of funds raised online during the month of October will benefit Good Shepherd Food Bank.

New this year, the Campaign also will be raising money to support a pilot backpack program for Special Olympics Maine. This innovative initiative will help meet the needs of Special Olympics athletes who are facing food insecurity while also providing them an opportunity to give back to their communities. The Campaign has a goal to raise $10,000 (or more) for Special Olympics Maine as part of our $100,000 Challenge. If your credit union would like to specifically contribute to this component of the Challenge, please email Jen Burke (jburke@mainecul.org) or Lauren McCallum (lmccallum@mainecul.org). Special Olympics will be provided a list of all credit unions that supported this pilot project at the end of the Challenge.

Accept Our Challenge

Pledge your donation anytime before October 31 and add your name to our Challenge Contributors page. Join Saco Valley CU as a supporter under the Blueberry Pie à la Mode category, or be the first to get your logo added to the Spaghetti & Meatballs, Chicken Wings, or Soup & Salad levels.

Donation checks to Campaign can be mailed to the League or contributions can be made online. Please keep in mind that 25% of any online donation will go directly to support Good Shepherd Food Bank. Contributions by your credit union to the Challenge will be added to your 2024 Ending Hunger fundraising totals.

Fueling Your Success

We hope your credit union will want to take part in the collective fundraising effort by encouraging your members, volunteers, and vendors to donate. Please visit the League’s website for turnkey collateral materials and social media assets that you can use to advertise this initiative. Even though the launch of the Challenge is still a few weeks away, we want to provide you timely access to these materials now to help with your planning. We also will be airing radio spots throughout the month of October to advertise the Challenge with the public.
