Let’s Celebrate National Credit Union Youth Month

April is here and it’s time to celebrate National Credit Union Youth Month and National Financial Literacy Month. While credit unions take financial education seriously all year long, this month provides us with even more opportunities to work with our members and community partners to promote financial wellness.

To help your credit union tailor its efforts to younger members, we encourage you to join with our League in promoting the theme, “It’s Never Too Early,” because the earlier kids can learn about money management and fiscal responsibility, the better! To echo this concept in your activities, the League has created a number of materials for your credit union to use. Along with social media graphics and sample messaging, the League has developed coloring pages and a word search to engage younger children. All of these materials can be found on our website. The hashtag, #CUYouthMonth, can also be utilized on social media to demonstrate the power of our collaborative efforts.

In addition to sharing Youth Month materials, credit unions should consider reaching out to their local schools and offer the Virtual Financial Fitness Fair and Elementary Curriculum program. These turnkey programs are highly impactful and provide students with age-appropriate lessons that are easy to understand.

“Poor personal finance decisions can take years—even decades in certain scenarios—to fix,” said Jake Holmes, the League’s Financial Literacy Outreach Coordinator. “While it’s never too late to improve your fiscal prowess, being proficient in financial literacy at an early age can help people avoid these scenarios. Promoting the theme that it’s never too early to build a foundation for financial success is critical during Credit Union Youth Month and all year long!”

If you have any questions about promoting financial wellness, or to inquire about Financial Fitness Fairs or the Elementary Curriculum program, please email Jake Holmes at jholmes@mainecul.org.

Happy National Credit Union Youth Month!
