The League has endorsed three exceptional candidates for U.S. Senate and House.  Here’s why they have credit union support:

Political Snapshot:  Senator Angus King

Angus King has been a key supporter of Maine’s credit unions.  He served as co-sponsor of the recently passed, S.2155, an important regulatory relief bill which eliminates burdensome and outdated rules governing financial institutions.  Senator King also sponsored legislation codifying the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) Credit Union Advisory Council (CUAC) – a valuable resource that provides the Bureau important feedback from credit unions on proposals and rule changes.

Senator King and his staff have always made themselves available to the League and our members to discuss pressing policy issues and when it matters most, Senator King is a reliable advocate our credit unions can count on.

Political Snapshot:  Representative Chellie Pingree

Chellie Pingree has been supporting the credit union movement dating back to her tenure in the Maine Legislature.  Since entering Congress, Rep. Pingree has sponsored several bills that have been important to credit unions.  Most recently, she joined as a co-sponsor of H.R. 2215, the SAFE Banking Act, which would protect credit unions offering financial services to legitimate marijuana-related businesses in states like Maine where it is legal.

Rep. Pingree has also supported our efforts to expand member business lending in Congress and she always makes it a point to visit credit union branches in her district when she is home.

Political Snapshot:  Representative Bruce Poliquin

Bruce Poliquin, a longtime credit union member, serves a member of the House Financial Services Committee, where he works on a wide range of issues related to the oversight of the financial services sector.

Rep. Poliquin has been a credit union ally during his time in Congress.  He understands the immense regulatory burden facing credit unions and has consistently fought against one-size-fits all regulations in Washington. He also takes on credit unions issues as his own and when a credit union contacts his office with an issue, he personally takes the initiative to solve the problem.

The Congressman has served as a co-sponsor to many bills that help credit unions, most recently to legislation that would lift the credit union member business lending cap and allow credit unions to serve more Maine small businesses.  Poliquin has also been a champion of the Senior$afe program, which was passed in S. 2155 earlier this year.
