UCU Makes an Impact During National Volunteer Week

During National Volunteer Week, the team at UCU embraced the spirit of service in meaningful ways. On Patriots’ Day, they held their third annual Here for U Day of Service, a credit union-wide initiative focused on giving back to communities across Maine. The day began with opportunities for staff to learn about local volunteer efforts and hear from colleagues who shared their own volunteer experiences from the past year. From there, employees rolled up their sleeves and got to work, volunteering with a range of organizations statewide. Rooted in the credit union philosophy of People Helping People, the event was a powerful reminder of UCU’s ongoing commitment to making a difference.

“Coming together as a team allows us to collectively share our purpose and support our neighbors with this dedicated service project,” said Renee Ouellette, President and CEO of UCU. “Our employees look forward to our Here for U Day of Service to give back and make a difference alongside their peers and create connections together. When we work together, great things happen. The impact of the day of service goes far beyond this one event and inspires us all to volunteer and impact our communities throughout the year.”

For the 2025 Here for U Day of Service, UCU volunteers spent time at the following organizations:

  • Good Shepherd Food Bank in Auburn
  • Sandy River Nursing Home in Farmington
  • Maine Needs in Portland
  • Dirigo Pines in Orono
  • Ronald McDonald House in Bangor and Portland
  • Habitat for Humanity Restore in Bangor
  • YMCA Camps in Ellsworth and Hampden
  • Southern Maine Agency on Aging at their Operations Center in Scarborough
  • Project Linus at UCU’s headquarters in Orono and at their Operations Center in Scarborough
  • Bangor Humane Society in Bangor
  • Ending Hunger bottle drive at UCU’s headquarters in Orono and at their Operations Center in Scarborough

UCU also took time during its monthly Board meeting to recognize and celebrate its volunteer Board members for their dedication, leadership, and ongoing commitment to the credit union’s success. These individuals generously contribute their time and expertise each month to support UCU and help advance the broader credit union movement.

Beyond internal efforts, UCU team members continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities. From serving on volunteer boards with organizations like United Way and local chambers of commerce to presenting Campaign for Ending Hunger donations to local food pantries and mentoring students through the JMG partnership and career exploration initiatives—UCU staff are deeply engaged in service that supports Maine communities.
