For members at TruChoice FCU, donating to local causes is as easy as using their card. When applying for a TruChoice credit card, members have the option to become a ‘TruHero’, allowing a portion of the interchange income generated from their purchases to be donated to either the Children’s Miracle Network or the McAuley Residence. Logos of the member’s chosen charity are even featured on the card itself.
TruChoice FCU started out serving the medical community in southern Maine, beginning as the credit union for Maine Medical Services and merging with Mercy Hospital FCU in the 70s. While TruChoice FCU now has a community charter serving much of Maine, it has remained close to its roots. When preparing to launch a credit card back in 2009, the credit union knew it wanted to do something that helped give back in ways that were meaningful to the medical services community. That’s when the idea for a TruHero credit card came together.
Since the launch of the McAuley Residence TruHero card, TruChoice FCU has donated a total of $31,309, including a yearly record of $7,016 in 2022! Likewise, since launching the Children’s Miracle Network TruHero card the credit union has donated a total of $78,071, including a yearly record of $15,413 in 2022! The program continues to grow, and over the last five years donations have more than doubled.
‘The great thing about these cards is how easy it makes it for members to give back,” shared Ken Acker, CEO at TruChoice FCU. “They don’t have to keep track of ongoing donations, or remember an annual gift, we take care of that for them! All they need to do is use the card, and we’ve got the rest. It’s a unique and special way for the entire credit union family to be involved in the community.”
