Today Is Your Day to Show Your Love!

Some of the League team show their love for credit unions in honor of #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day! From left to right: Lauren Simonds, Kelley Souza, Elise Baldacci, Jared Gay, Krista Bruns, and Jen Burke.

On this #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day, our League is thankful for the shared People Helping People enthusiasm across our state. We may be partial, but we think Maine’s credit union movement is special and deserves to be celebrated today and every day.

Between collective efforts to fight hunger, support Special Olympics and other local athletics programs, uplift communities in a vast variety of ways, and advocate for strong financial futures for all, credit unions throughout every corner of Maine are committed to helping their communities and members thrive.

The #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day social media blitz is an annual event hosted by the Illinois Credit Union League with the goal of inspiring authentic conversations about why we all love credit unions so much. Today, we encourage your credit union and staff to share on your social media channels and use the hashtag #ILoveMyCreditUnion (they track engagement through the hashtag). The more love shown online, the bigger our collective impact can and will be.

Here at the League, our team took this time to reflect on why credit unions are special to us:

  • “My family has been with our credit union for as long as I can remember,” shared Jen Burke, Vice President – Outreach & Strategic Initiatives. “What I love most is how genuinely they care—especially for my parents as they’ve gotten older. The staff knows them by name when they walk into the branch, and it’s clear they’re always looking out for them. That kind of personal connection and trust means so much, and for that, I’m especially grateful.”
  • “I switched from a local bank to the credit union my dad is a long-time member of when I was 17 to have more convenience, far fewer fees and limitations, and gain financial independence through my own debit card—which the bank wouldn’t allow me to have under 18,” explained Lauren Simonds, Director of Communications & Social Impact. “Since then, I have not looked back and have turned to my credit union for everything financial, where I feel valued as a member instead of seen as a customer to profit from. Credit unions make our lives easier in so many ways, and I always advocate for credit union membership over other financial institutions because credit unions genuinely care about helping members simply because it’s the right thing to do.”
  • I will never forget the day I got my first car loan at the credit union,” described Krista Bruns, Executive Assistant. “I was a young girl and so nervous to be doing this on my own. The credit union made me feel so comfortable, they believed in me, and they treated me like family. This is why I will always love my credit union.”
  • “I love credit unions because of their all-encompassing approach to improving the lives of everyone they touch—whether directly or indirectly,” reflected Jake Holmes, Director of Outreach & Strategic Planning. “Whether it’s improving the financial lives of members, enriching their communities through philanthropy, or providing ever important education, the impact credit unions make on everyone is seemingly boundless.”

Credit unions make a difference in many lives every day, from living out the People Helping People philosophy to caring for communities all over. Our League cannot wait to see how credit unions in Maine choose to recognize our industry today in honor of #ILoveMyCreditUnion Day!
