Summer Meals Provide Critical Lifeline to Children Across Maine

While we think of summer vacation as a fun time for children, it can be a challenging season for many families across our state. School meals provide a vital lifeline for those facing food insecurity. During the summer months, this lifeline temporarily goes away. Summer meal programs help fill the gaps and ensure children in all corners of Maine have access to healthy meals.

As they have done in the past, our friends at Full Plates Full Potential shared with our League the summer meal grant requests they received from school departments across Maine. Your credit union should have received an email from Jen Burke outlining requests in your area. If your credit union or your credit union chapter has Ending Hunger dollars that you would like to put toward helping Full Plates fulfill or partially fulfill a summer grant request, please email Burke before close of business on Friday, June 21. She also can resend your credit union the list of local schools and organizations in your area requesting grants.

Last summer, thanks to our credit union network’s generosity, Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger donated over $26,000 to support local meal programs. Given how important summer meals are to Maine children in need, we hope we can surpass this level of support this year. Please consider lending a hand!
