Maine Credit Unions’ Financial Literacy Blog Helps Your Members Spot Scams

(From the Financial Literacy Blog) — Fraudsters are ever-evolving and deceptively clever in their attempts to obtain your money and personal information. Maine credit unions are committed to providing you with the tools and education needed to help you safeguard yourself against financial exploitation. If you’ve been spontaneously contacted, think back to the acronym below to help you avoid falling victim to scams:

S – Stop and think before you act.

Don’t rush—scammers pressure you to act quickly and make payments without taking the time to think the situation through.

C – Confirm the source.

Verify who’s really contacting you—through trusted numbers or websites.

A – Avoid sharing personal information.

Never provide personal information like your birthday, Social Security number, or mother’s maiden name in response to a call, email, or text—especially if it is unsolicited.

M – Monitor your accounts regularly.

Check statements and online banking often for suspicious activity.
