On December 5, Senator Susan Collins visited the Maine Credit Union League for a meeting with the League’s Board of Directors and employees of both the League and Synergent.
Senator Collins opened the discussion by expressing her appreciation for the work credit unions do to provide essential financial services to Mainers. She addressed a range of topics, including her continued commitment to expanding financial education throughout the state. The League’s Director of Outreach & Strategic Planning, Jake Holmes, briefed the Senator on his work with Financial Fitness Fairs, which educate students across Maine on key financial concepts such as credit, loans, housing costs, and saving. Senator Collins underscored the value of these programs and affirmed their importance in preparing young Mainers for long-term financial stability.
Before concluding the meeting, Senator Collins spoke about her long-standing support for Maine’s credit unions at America’s Credit Unions’ Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC). She noted that she has never missed attending the League’s annual breakfast in Washington, D.C.—a tradition she fully intends to continue.
The League is grateful to Senator Collins for taking the time to meet with credit union leaders and staff, and for her continued commitment to supporting Maine’s credit unions.

On December 9—a few days following Senator Collins’ visit—credit union advocacy continued in the community as Congresswoman Chellie Pingree visited Midcoast FCU’s Freeport branch. We greatly appreciated the opportunity to welcome her, with League President Elise Baldacci and Director of Advocacy & Compliance Jared Gay joining Midcoast leadership to greet the Congresswoman.
During the visit, Congresswoman Pingree met with members of Midcoast FCU’s team, including President/CEO Joe Gervais; toured the branch; and spoke with staff. She also joined a group of new hires in the middle of their orientation session and offered reflections about public service and the important work carried out by credit union professionals throughout Maine. The Congresswoman pointed to the recent federal government shutdown as a powerful example of how credit unions nationwide stepped up to support federal employees by offering zero-percent and low-interest loans.
Midcoast FCU’s engagement with Congresswoman Pingree reflects the continued value of face-to-face advocacy and the importance of keeping policymakers connected to the credit union mission. The League appreciates the Congresswoman’s time and her ongoing support for the credit union movement.
