The League extends our condolences to the loved ones of Bruce Wilson, including his credit union family at Ancorum. Wilson passed away unexpectedly on February 27. He was a long-serving member of Ancorum CU’s Board, dedicating 27 years of service to the People Helping People movement. Bruce Dana Wilson of Falmouth, Maine passed away suddenly on Friday, February 27, 2026. He is survived by his wife Susanne Hamilton Wilson, daughter Laura Elizabeth Gilpatrick and husband Corey of Auburn, ME, grandchildren Katherine Gilpatrick and partner Katia Kordek of Framingham, MA, and Benjamin Gilpatrick of Auburn, ME. He is also survived by his siblings: Scott Wilson and wife Karen of Ooltewah, TN, Wayne Wilson and wife Pamela of Old Orchard Beach, ME, Bonnie Holding and husband Blaine of Stratton, ME, and Randy Wilson and wife Rose of Rector, AR.
Bruce was born on May 22, 1949, in Gloucester, MA to Joseph Gordon Wilson and Barbara Pratt Wilson. He moved to Maine at the age of four and settled with his family in Scarborough where he attended school until graduation in 1967. He then proudly served his country and after returning home, went on to earn his Associates Degree in Marine Engineering from Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute.
Bruce served proudly in the U.S. Army for three years, spending time overseas in Germany and then coming home to Maine where he joined the Air National Guard, serving for over 30 years at the 265th Combat Communications Squadron based in South Portland and achieving Chief Master Sargent, but ultimately retiring from the Maine National Guard Joint Force Headquarters as Command Chief Master Sargent in Augusta. He was often referred to by his colleagues/friends, in and out of the service, as “Chief” – not just a title, but a term of deep admiration and affection. In addition to his long, dedicated, and decorated military career, he also was incredibly proud of the work he and his wife did for our veteran families through the Maine National Guard Family Program, offering support and resources for families of National Guard members, including educational programs, counseling, and community connections.
Bruce’s professional career culminated with not only his service to our country, but in the private sector, ending with his retirement from Computer Sciences Corporation in Bath, ME, and currently serving on the Board of Director’s for Ancorum Credit Union. Bruce always understood the importance of stewardship and contributing back to his community and gave all he could of his time and dedication.
But above all, Bruce was the epitome of a “family-man”. Bruce married the love of his life, Sue, on December 29, 1972, and they shared 53 glorious, married years together. As individuals, they were special enough, but the marriage and love that was shared by them was something truly remarkable. Their marriage was the standard that so many searched for and was an amazing model for their family and friends.
Bruce and Sue bought their first home in Portland, ME and raised their daughter there for over 20 years and then built their final home with in-law apartment in Falmouth, ME where they have lived for 28 years together. This home has seen the marriage of their daughter, birth of their two grandchildren, been home to both of their parents at different times, and endless holidays and gatherings that were so special to them both.
Bruce was a proud veteran, a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, and a true gentleman. He was well respected and loved for the time, care, and love he gave to his family and friends. From earlier memories of cruising in Casco Bay on the Tightline and Calico with family and friends, to camping trips in Eustis, boating on Sebago Lake, Jeepin’ with his son-in-law, and traveling with Sue all over the U.S., especially their extended trips throughout Florida. There was never a man that loved spending time with his family more than Bruce Wilson. Many times, we would all be together sitting in the living room or around the dining room table as a family, and he would just sit back and smile knowing that he was the most blessed man in the world and had all he ever needed. His greatest legacy is his family, who he loved so deeply and who will carry his memory forward with immense pride and gratitude. All who knew him will remember that handsome smile, strong, steady presence, booming laugh, and how all around him was made to feel right at home.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, March 7, 2026, at Hobbs Funeral Home on 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, ME, from 3:00-5:00pm. The family would also like to express their deep appreciation for the efforts of the BJ’s Wholesale Club employees and the first responders. Their prompt actions, professionalism, and compassion during a very difficult time provided comfort and support when it was needed most. The family is sincerely grateful for their dedication and care.
