In his annual address to Delegates' at the Maine CU League's Annual Meeting, your League's President John Murphy highlighted the many positive milestones and accomplishments of your League and Maine credit unions in the past year, as well as articulated a clear vision for the road ahead.
In his remarks, Murphy outlined the success of the past year including record membership, a trend that includes 55,000 new members joining a Maine credit union since 2008, strong share and asset growth, as well as robust loan growth. He said that your League's Statewide Awareness Program has helped to "raise awareness and present a clear, strong message to consumers about the benefits of credit unions." Murphy also noted the strong advocacy presence of your League as "critical to having our voice heard in Augusta and in Washington. Our relationship and frequent communications with Senator King led to his sponsoring the Credit Union Insurance Parity Act which was passed in December, and our entire Delegation hears from us frequently regarding data breaches, regulatory burden and other important issues. In Augusta, our advocacy includes opposing legislation harmful to credit unions and supporting improvements to the foreclosure process."
The cooperative spirit of credit unions and the role that cooperation continues to have in helping credit unions grow, especially in convenience. "As a result of credit unions coming together to form the SurF Network and the shared branch network, Maine credit unions are more convenient and have more locations than any other financial institution in Maine." He also added that cooperation in credit union service organizations, such as Synergent and CUSO Home Lending help to provide the resources and tools to position credit unions strongly in the marketplace.
"Maine credit unions are a success story for today and the future. By working together cooperatively, we can achieve our vision of having Maine credit unions as the primary financial institution for the majority of Maine consumers," concluded Murphy.
