June is National Hunger Awareness Month. In Maine, June 1 also marks the beginning of our month-long Campaign for Ending Hunger $100,000 Challenge. Maine credit unions will be working together to raise at least $100,000 in thirty days to benefit Good Shepherd Food Bank and local food pantries.
With COVID-19 restrictions lifting, most Mainers might not realize how the ongoing pandemic is still impacting food security for individuals and families across our state. Many people continue to struggle financially. Oftentimes, those financial struggles make it hard to put healthy meals on the table.
Children are particularly vulnerable to hunger, especially during the summer months. While school vacation provides a fun and restful break for many Maine children, for those without adequate access to food, summertime can be challenging. For some students, the meals they receive at school throughout the academic year are the only meals they eat all day!
For these reasons, we can’t let up on our longstanding commitment to raise dollars to support our hunger-relief partners. Last year, with help from the League and Synergent, Maine credit unions raised $230,000 during our first $100,000 Challenge. Let’s rise to the challenge again and bring in even more money this year to combat hunger in our state.
To help your credit union promote the Challenge, the League has developed several resources and created a list of fundraising activities to consider. All materials can be found on the League’s website. We’ve also launched a new 2021 Contributors page on the Campaign’s website to publicize all our amazing Challenge supporters, including those credit unions who make donations to this effort.
The League looks forward to learning about your Challenge efforts, promoting what you are doing, and celebrating your successes. Don’t forget to highlight your activity on social media and pass the challenge on to others to help us reach our goal.
$100,000 is an ambitious goal, but one we can certainly reach together!
