New League Board Structure and Election Procedures

The Maine Credit Union League and Synergent are governed by a democratically-elected Board of Directors whose function is to ensure the organizations’ initiatives serve the needs of the credit union community at large. In 2025, Board Director elections will commence under a new structure. If you’re an existing or aspiring Board Director, read on to learn more and find out how you can throw your name in the proverbial hat for consideration.

The new structure, approved at the 2024 Annual Meeting, reduces the number of Board seats from eleven to nine by eliminating at large seats. Board Directors will no longer be elected at the chapter level. To foster equitable representation on the Board, four seats will represent geographic regions of the state, and five positions will represent asset categories.

Regional Categories (Counties) – Four Seats

  • Region A: Aroostook, Penobscot, Piscataquis, Washington – 1
  • Region B: Androscoggin, Franklin, Oxford, Sagadahoc, Somerset – 1
  • Region C: Cumberland, York – 1
  • Region D: Hancock, Kennebec, Knox, Lincoln, Waldo – 1

Asset Categories – Five Seats

  • At or above the median asset size of $186,065,838 – 3
  • Below the median asset size of $186,065,838 – 2

If you would like to run for the Board, you will need to determine which category you would like to represent—either your region or asset size. If you are unsure of your eligibility, please reference this list.

To be considered, complete the online Intent to Run form, located on the League’s website, by January 15, 2025.

After reviewing submitted forms, the Nominating Committee will finalize the ballots for each category, putting forth all submitted names as long as the candidates meet eligibility requirements. For example, the committee will confirm if the applicant is a senior executive or volunteer and verify both the asset size and headquarters of the credit union before adding their name to the ballot.

In March, electronic ballots will be sent to credit union CEOs (in Maine only). At that time, they will cast votes in the categories their credit union represents. Commencing with the elections, all Board seats will be considered vacant. The election results will be finalized and communicated at least 30 days before the League’s Annual Meeting in May.
