NCUA Awards Nearly $40,000 In Grants To Maine CUs; Congressman Poliquin Expresses Congratulations

Recently, the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) announced that five Maine credit unions were awarded nearly $40,000 in grants.  Among the first to congratulate the recipients was Congressman Bruce Poliquin.  In a statement and release that attracted significant media coverage, Congressman Poliquin said, "Our community credit unions are the backbone of Maine's economy.  I congratulate those credit unions in Maine that were selected to receive some of this grant."

Your League's President John Murphy called Congressman Poliquin's acknowledgement and praise of Maine credit unions receiving grants "further indication of Congressman Poliquin's support and recognition of the important role of Maine's credit unions in communities across Maine.  Congressman Poliquin has spent much of the past few weeks visiting a number of Maine credit unions so he is becoming even more aware of all of the great things that credit unions do to serve their members.  We appreciate that Congressman Poliquin took the time to congratulate the recipients."

NCUA awarded a total of $39,275 to five credit unions in Maine's Second District, including Eastmill Federal Credit Union, Brewer Federal Credit Union, Lincoln Maine Federal Credit Union, Changing Seasons Federal Credit Union in Hampden, and Community Credit Union in Lewiston.  The NCUA told your League that it approved funding this year to 225 credit unions for projects building their service, protecting them from fraud or cybercrime in their communities. 580 credit unions applied for $9.4 million in grant funds. Only the most impressive applications were approved.

While Congressman Poliquin congratulated credit unions on the grants, he also took the occasion to reiterate his desire to reduce regulatory burden on Maine credit unions.  "As a member of the House Financial Services Committee, I will continue to do everything, within my jurisdiction, to help our local community credit unions grow, expand, and create a better business climate in Maine."
