More Than $35,000 Donated to Fight Summer Hunger

Addressing hunger in our state remains a top priority for credit unions. Tackling this issue takes many forms—and during the summer months, one important way credit unions make an impact is by supporting programs that provide meals to children while they are out of school. Once again, Maine’s credit unions have risen to the occasion.

Through the Campaign for Ending Hunger and direct donations, credit unions have contributed more than $35,000 to help Full Plates Full Potential fulfill or partially fund summer meal grant requests submitted by local schools and nonprofits. These grants help organizations expand access to nutritious meals during summer break, supporting families who rely on free school breakfasts and lunches during the academic year.

“I’m so proud of our credit union movement’s commitment to giving back and supporting critical programs to combat hunger in their communities,” said Jen Burke, League Vice President of Outreach and Strategic Initiatives. “The response to Full Plates’ request for assistance was overwhelming. In fact, we’re providing even more funding support this summer than we did last year—and it’s special to raise more than $35,000 during the Campaign’s 35th anniversary year. These efforts will go a long way in making summer more enjoyable for many Maine families.”
