"Without the sponsorship, leadership and support of Representative Barry Hobbins on your League's bill to provide an option for expedited foreclosures, the legislation would not have passed and we would not be less than a month away from the law taking effect. His role in sponsoring the bill and his role as House Chair of the Judiciary Committee, which heard the bill, were critical components in the successful passage," announced your League's President John Murphy in his remarks to local credit union representatives at an Appreciation Luncheon the League hosted for Representative Hobbins in Saco, on September 17th.
Representative Hobbins, who represents part of Saco in the Maine House, praised your League for its role in the process, as well. "The League understood what it was going to take to move this bill forward and, to your credit, met with all of the interested parties and made a strong case. In addition, your testimony and work in Augusta laid out the reasons for this bill clearly. I applaud your efforts."
Murphy noted that one of Rep. Hobbins' local credit union constituents, Ocean Communities FCU, first brought forth the idea and need for this legislation to your League's Governmental Affairs Committee. "Claude Morgan suggested this legislation as an alternative, and your League's Governmental Affairs Team also provided feedback and direction on what type of legislation was needed. The efforts and involvement of credit unions across the state in contacting their local legislators about this legislation and asking for their support was also pivotal. This legislation was a team effort, and we can all celebrate its success."
The expedited foreclosure option becomes effective October 15, 2015.
