In advance of the January launch of the Paid Family Medical Leave program, the Maine Department of Labor (MDOL) has released a one-page overview document for employers. The Paid Family Medical Leave Program, which was a focus for lawmakers during this past legislative session, will provide benefits to employees who take leave to care for family members.
There have been ongoing questions about the program and its implementation, and the League has advocated for credit unions throughout the rulemaking process, submitting a letter in July regarding the implementation timeline. As a result of the more than 1,000 comments submitted to the MDOL during its rulemaking, exemptions may now be requested beginning April 1, 2025. The League encourages all credit unions who are planning to request an exemption to do so early to avoid paying into the program for longer than necessary.
In addition to the recently released one-pager, the MDOL also has released a poster designed to inform employees about the new benefit changes. Both of these resources are available on the MDOL website under the employer resources dropdown. If your credit union has additional questions regarding the new law, or the program’s implementation, we encourage you to reach out to a member of the League’s Governmental Affairs team or your benefits provider.
