The League and Synergent join Maine credit unions in mourning the loss of our former colleague, Kathleen “Katie” Lloyd O’Brien, who passed away on May 28 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. NAPLES – Kathleen “Katie” Lloyd O’Brien, 60, passed away surrounded by family on May 28, 2025 at Maine Medical Center after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. She was born Nov. 18, 1964 in Bangor, the third of five children to Joseph A. Lloyd and Lois A. (Lowry) Lloyd.

Katie grew up on the Aroostook Research Farm in Presque Isle. She and her siblings spent their days biking, skiing, and snowmobiling around the farm and swimming and canoeing at their camp on Echo Lake. Katie was an exceptional athlete and played field hockey and basketball for Presque Isle High School.

After graduating in 1983, Katie attended the University of Maine at Presque Isle and the University of Maine at Orono before pausing her education and moving to Portland. It was there, while working as a waitress at the Great Lost Bear, that she met the love of her life and future husband, Dennis O’Brien. They married on Aug. 19, 1989 and moved to a home in Portland.

She graduated from the University of Southern Maine in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in business.

On April 21, 1992, she gave birth to her daughter, Bailey O’Brien, and raised her in a home filled with laughter, love, and Jimmy Buffett music. The “three musketeers” had fun together wherever they were, whether sitting around the firepit in the backyard or spending time on Peaks Island, one of their favorite places.

Professionally, Katie had an impressive career supporting the Maine credit union movement.

After nearly a decade working for the Maine Credit Union League (later Synergent), she was the Executive Vice President and CFO of Casco FCU in Gorham from 2001 until her retirement in 2021 due to her diagnosis. She also started her own side business, Mighty Key Consulting, LLC, to provide training for credit unions throughout Maine.

In 2018, Katie and Dennis moved to their dream house on Sebago Lake in Naples where they spent countless afternoons cruising around the lake on their boat. She often had a smile on her face, especially while biking, kayaking, and riding on the back of her husband’s motorcycle, and was always quick with a joke. Even during the toughest moments of her six-year battle with cancer, she could find a bright spot in the darkness. Everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her is better for it.

Katie is predeceased by her parents, Joseph and Lois. She will be missed terribly by all who love her, including her husband, Dennis; her daughter, Bailey; her sisters Barbara Lloyd and Julie Lloyd-Walsh, and her husband David Walsh; her brothers Joseph Lloyd Jr., and his wife Kristina Lloyd, and John Lloyd, and his husband John Cariani; her mother-in-law, Katherine Joyce O’Brien; nieces and nephews; brothers- and sisters-in law; and countless friends.

Thank you to the medical staff at New England Cancer Specialists, Maine Medical Center, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, and Mass General Hospital for their excellent care over the years.

Visiting hours will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, June 6, at A.T. Hutchins Funeral Home, 660 Brighton Ave. A private graveside service for family and close friends will be held in Calvary Cemetery.
