Maine Credit Unions Spend Over 13,000 Hours Volunteering in 2021

Each year, Maine credit union employees contribute thousands of hours in volunteer time to a variety of organizations and causes in communities across Maine. The Campaign for Ending Hunger, Special Olympics Maine, and the Humane Society are just a few examples. It is important to track these efforts to ensure we are effectively communicating how Maine credit unions carry out our People Helping People philosophy when speaking with the media, political leaders, and the general public.

To help the League quantify the volunteer efforts of our credit unions, the League encourages credit unions to complete a monthly reporting form using the CUs Share for ME program, hosted on the League’s website.

The League is pleased to announce that in 2021, credit unions reported a total of 13,309.64 volunteer hours. According to the Independent Sector, these efforts are worth approximately $379,857 in donated time. University CU, Community CU, New Dimensions FCU, Gardiner FCU, and Midcoast FCU contributed the most hours in donated time, with each logging 1,000 hours or more.

Top Five CUs Share for ME Credit Union Leaders

  • University CU – 3,249.36 hours
  • Community CU – 1,343.25 hours
  • New Dimensions FCU – 1,332.25 hours
  • Gardiner FCU – 1,331.75 hours
  • Midcoast FCU – 1,216.4 hours

Don’t let your credit union’s volunteer work go unrecognized! As we enter the new year, please consider setting a reminder for your credit union to complete the online form monthly. To complete the form, visit the League’s website, enter the name of your credit union, what month your staff volunteered, and how many staff members volunteered. After that, select the philanthropic effort(s) from the provided list and click “submit.” It’s that easy!

“The beginning of the year is a good time to remind credit unions about our CUs Share for ME program,” said Jake Holmes, League Financial Literacy Outreach Coordinator. “It only takes a few minutes to complete the form and the time is well worth it as it helps us communicate the credit union difference in our communities and to our members.”

CUs Share for ME forms should be submitted by the tenth of each month. If you have any questions about the CUs Share for ME program, email Jake Holmes, at jholmes@mainecul.org, or call 207.773.5671, ext. 266.
