A simple idea sparked by compassion has grown into a meaningful community initiative at Lincoln Maine FCU.
The credit union launched a Community Care Cabinet, a self-serve resource designed to help individuals and families facing food insecurity or other immediate needs. The concept was inspired by a conversation among staff about a longtime member who had recently fallen on hard times after a lifetime of helping others.
“That conversation really struck a chord,” staff recalled. “It made us wonder how many others in our community might not have someone they can turn to. We wanted to create something simple, accessible, and judgment-free—a way for anyone to get what they need and to know they can trust us to care.”
From idea to action, the effort came together quickly. What began as a morning huddle conversation turned into a full-fledged project by day’s end. Staff found a cabinet in storage, cleaned and placed it in the credit union’s foyer, and began collecting donations. By lunchtime, contributions were already coming in, and by the end of the day, the cabinet was fully stocked.
The goal, according to the credit union, is straightforward: to stand beside the community.
Community response has been overwhelmingly positive. Residents have reached out on social media and in person to express their support and offer donations. Many have shared the credit union’s post across local groups, helping the effort grow well beyond its walls.
There are no plans to discontinue the cabinet, which will remain available as long as there is a need, and the credit union can continue to help. For other credit unions considering similar efforts, Lincoln Maine FCU encourages looking close to home and empowering staff to turn their compassion into action!
Marketing team member Kelsey reflected on what the project represents for the credit union, “Community is at the center of everything that we do, believe, and stand for. It only feels right to support the ones who make it possible for us to do what we do every day.”
Morgan from the credit union’s loan department added, “It’s amazing to see how much trust our community has in us. The cabinet has become more than just a place to help, it’s also a place where people know they can give. We’re proud to be part of something that brings people together in such a genuine way. One member even asked how they could donate a turkey for Thanksgiving.”
At Lincoln Maine FCU, the Community Care Cabinet stands as a reminder that even small acts of kindness can have a lasting impact.
