Lewiston Non-Profit Receives Support from Dirigo FCU

Dirgo FCU employees visit with campers at The Root Cellar’s Super Summer Day Camp.

One of the many ways Dirigo FCU gives back to the community is through its support of The Root Cellar, a local non-profit community center serving residents living in downtown Lewiston.  The organization offers free after-school enrichment, mentoring programs, English language learning classes, community dinners, and a summer day camp.

Since 2014, Dirigo FCU has served as the lead sponsor of The Root Cellar’s Super Summer Day Camp.  As part of its sponsorship, credit union employees recently spent time with the campers and treated them to ice cream sundaes to help beat the summer heat.

“We support the Root Cellar because we believe their mission closely aligns with the credit union philosophy of People Helping People,” said Nicole Mailhot, Dirigo FCU Chief Business Officer. “When we began our partnership with them, we supported their summer soccer program.  But as our relationship with the organization evolved, so did our level of support. We are proud to be the lead sponsor of their summer camp, which serves more than 100 kids daily.”

Dirigo FCU also partners with The Root Cellar in support of the organization’s New Americans program, which educates new Mainers about the U.S. banking system. The program provides guidance about establishing a membership at a credit union.

“Our credit union isn’t just a financial partner,” said Mailhot. “Our employees regularly volunteer at the center. Whether we are teaching new Americans how to utilize the services of a credit union, or spending an afternoon handing out ice cream, we love giving back to this special organization.”
