League, Maine CUs Honored With National Desjardins & Dora Maxwell Awards

At the recent Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Governmental Affairs Conference, your League and several Maine credit unions came back with not only some political capital built up but the need to build more shelves to display awards.  At the Awards Reception in Washington, D.C., your League and Maine credit unions took home three first-place, a second place and an Honorable Mention Dora Maxwell and Desjardins Awards.

Your League received a first-place Desjardins Award for Youth Financial Education for Leagues with 75 credit unions and under.  "Through its leadership and commitment, the Maine League continues to develop initiatives and increase awareness for credit union efforts in youth financial education in Maine.  From financial fitness fairs to a strong presence in schools, the League and Maine's credit unions are significantly involved in personal finance in Maine schools," stated the judges.  The Maine League is a repeat recipient of this Award.

"We are pleased that the commitment of Maine's credit unions in youth financial education was again recognized by receiving a national Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award.  We dedicate a significant amount of time and resources in coordinating and promoting financial fitness fairs, discussing financial education with our legislators, and highlighting the importance of financial education as a founding member of Maine Jump$tart and other coalitions.  This Award honors those efforts and the collective success of your League and Maine's credit unions in being a leader and an example in youth financial education in Maine," stated your League's President John Murphy.

In addition to your League, four Maine credit unions were honored including Community Credit Union with a first-place Desjardins Award for Adult Financial Education; Casco Federal Credit Union with a first-place Dora Maxwell Award for Social Responsibility; Five County Credit Union with an Honorable Mention Dora Maxwell Award; and Central Maine Federal Credit Union received an Honorable Mention Desjardins Award for Adult Financial Education.

In twelve out of the past sixteen years, at least one Maine credit union has received a national Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and/or Desjardins Award.  "Maine credit unions serve their members and communities every day, and it's nice to see them receive recognition nationally on a regular basis," explained your League's VP of Governmental & Public Affairs Jon Paradise.

The deadline to submit entries for your League's state Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and/or Desjardins Youth and Adult Awards is Sunday, April 12.  All entrants will be honored at your League's 77th Annual Meeting on Friday, May 15, at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland.  The first-place recipients in all categories will compete in the national competition in the fall.
