MaineHealth Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (BBCH) is deeply committed to providing expert, compassionate care to the children and families it serves—a dedication that extends far beyond medical treatment. Each summer, BBCH’s Child Life Team coordinates a special “Camp Week,” transforming the hospital’s pediatric inpatient unit into a memorable summer camp experience and ensuring that children receiving care can still enjoy some of the fun and magic of the season.
This year, the Maine Credit Union League was proud to help extend the spirit of Camp Week beyond the pediatric inpatient unit and into the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), offering a special treat for the families and dedicated staff who spend their days there.
On Thursday, August 27, our staff hosted an ice cream and sherbet bar for NICU families and staff, complete with plenty of toppings and sweet treats. While a scoop of ice cream may be a small gesture, the League hoped the experience could provide a moment of joy, connection, and respite for families navigating challenging circumstances—as well as show appreciation for the healthcare professionals caring for some of Maine’s most vulnerable patients.
“It was incredibly meaningful to spend time with the families and staff in MaineHealth’s NICU and offer a small moment of joy during Camp Week,” shared Lauren Simonds, the League’s Director of Communications & Social Impact. “The care, compassion, and dedication shown by the hospital’s team every day makes an extraordinary difference for Maine families. We’re grateful for opportunities like this to show our appreciation, support those who give so much to others, and help brighten the day for families during a challenging time.”
Supporting Maine people and the organizations that care for them is an important part of the credit union movement’s longstanding commitment to community. The League was grateful to play a small role in this year’s Camp Week and help spread a little summer cheer to BBCH’s NICU—celebrating the caregivers, families, and youngest Mainers at the heart of this important work.
