League Governmental Affairs Team Urges Early Voting Following Successful Candidate Nights

Over the past few weeks, the League’s Governmental Affairs team has traveled to credit union chapter meetings around the state to introduce candidates with their local credit union officials. At each of these events, the message has been consistent: be engaged with the political process and vote in the upcoming election.

At an event for the Northern Penobscot Chapter of Credit Unions on September 17, Robert Caverly, League Vice President of Advocacy & Outreach, helped to facilitate the discussion between the candidates and area credit unions.

“It was great to give our potential elected officials a real introduction to the credit union difference,” said Caverly. “Those connections make all the difference when we are in Augusta lobbying for credit unions.”

On the following day, the League team provided the Bangor Chapter of Credit Unions with an advocacy presentation, discussing local races and emphasizing the advantage of early voting.

“When you turn your ballot in early, a smart campaign will remove your name from their mailing list,” added Caverly.

Krista Simonis, League Director of Governmental Affairs, urged everyone to make a plan to vote. “You can say you want to vote, and you might have the best of intentions, but until you make a plan and follow through, you can’t really say you’re a voter,” said Simonis. “Maine has some of the highest voting participation rates in the country and I know we can take the top spot this year.”

The York Chapter of Credit Unions held a candidate dinner on October 1. Twelve candidates from the area attended the special event. The candidates addressed their connections to credit unions, spoke about some of their most impactful learning experiences, and described why they are running for public office. Candidates were especially impressed with the League’s commitment to financial education and the chapter’s dedication to Financial Fitness Fairs.

Regardless of party or preference, the League hope all eligible voters cast their ballots before 8:00 pm on Tuesday, November 5. Voting is central to how credit unions operate and it is a requirement for democratic governance. We encourage everyone to take a look at the League’s endorsements for public office, and if you have questions on candidates or how to register to vote, please reach out to a member of the Governmental Affairs team.
